Pros

Large environmental consulting firm with offices worldwide. Very competent technical staff, with experts in all areas. Large client base. Allows flexible/hybrid working arrangements. Compensation and benefits are in line with industry norms for the most part.

Cons

Upper Management has gone downhill since a large private equity firm became the majority shareholder in the firm about 3 years ago. Since then they have been relentless in constant pressure on staff for billability and profitability. Labor rates have been raised significantly making it difficult to retain work and win new work. Continual, frequent, and unnecessary work processes changes make it difficult to get things done efficiently. If you don't have enough billable work to meet your goal its up to you to find new work. ERM has lost many qualified and experienced technical professionals in the last year or two as a result of these changes. In company wide emails and all staff calls with upper management it feels like all they ever talk about is ERM's sustainability practice, even though most of the company did not work in this area. Mid-Management was okay, but I think they were undercut at times by Upper Management.

Pros

ERM has (or at least had) a lot of good people working for them. They make a lot of promises and, at first, the company culture appears really exciting - a variety of projects, travel opportunities, good professional challenges. However, ERM is a master at 'bait and switch" - what they tell when offering a job is much different from reality.

Cons

ERM encourages employees to develop new service offerings, but this is above the required sales and billability metrics. In order to be successful, you must work 50+ hours per week. Just because your resume is used to win a contract, doesn't mean you will actually get to work on it, even if you wrote the proposal. ERM will switch your hours that were included in the proposal with lower cost employees to increase company profits. Also, what ERM promises a client is not necessarily what the client will receive; ERM believes that they should give the client what ERM believes the client needs instead of what the client asks for. As a result, additional contracts are 'lost' when clients, even 'key' clients, realize that they were not given what they were promised. . Partners can change the sales credits to favor 'their' teams and keep their own groups' numbers good even if the credits do not reflect the amount of each person's contribution to winning a contract. Partner's also fight over contracts, stealing the best ones, when given a change. NO pretense of teamwork. The motto 'One world, One Company' is total malarkey. The motto should be everyone for themselves, watch your back, and don't worry about integrity. Integrity won't pay the bills!

Sinking Ship

Pros

Most of my colleagues (junior and mid-level, and even a few senior level) are great, talented, and enjoyable to spend time with. Many of our projects and clients are interesting and rewarding.

Cons

This company feels like it's in a death spiral that is far worse than (admittedly bad) industry conditions would dictate. Weekly layoffs and voluntary departures--the lucky rats able to escape the sinking ship--and the widespread feeling that senior leadership has not the slightest clue what they're doing. Short-sighted, profit-minded decisions that will prevent this company from recovering.
