Pros

Salaries are decent even though not competitive enough, but not too bad. Challenging projects and exposure to all parts of software development life cycle due to very small group (of about 20 IT people). Friendly group of people.

Cons

There is absolutely no recognition for hard work and talent. No professional growth at all. No work/life balance, company expects you to be doing work 24x7. On-call/production which is 24x7 every 6 weeks is strenuous and tiresome. Management doesn't have focus and control of the projects and are not planned well. Annual reviews are a joke, very partial and only done for the sake of company policy.

IT staff is exhausted

Pros

Challenges are exciting, exhilarating. Other peers are pleasant to work with, no 'know-it-alls', no egos. Peers share information freely. Some comp-time for On-Call time is appreciated.

Cons

Emergencies never end, generally 1 or more per day. Stress of production problems or emergency projects never end. Any planning beyond 3 days is pointless. Management expects us to hit dates during periods of utter crisis (systems down for half day, several critical staff quit). Staff must do 55 to 65+ hour weeks to keep systems and company afloat (at least for last 18 months) All the above is 'normal' and the way things get done.
