As a day to day substitute teacher, there are no requirements to do lesson plans, grade papers, or conduct parent teacher conferences. The ability to choose days in any school district covered by ESS is the best reason for working with this company! In addition, ESS employees can apply for summer unemployment compensation (since school is out). School personnel, staff, and students, have been very supportive and excited about welcoming substitutes to their classrooms. As a retired teacher, I look forward to meeting new faces everyday!

Cons

Usually at the beginning of the school year, there are only a few substitute jobs listed as teachers establish their classrooms. As a result, income will vary throughout the school year with multiple listings of jobs through spring and early summer. Benefits are limited but at least available.

Flexibility for Mobile Substitutes

Pros

ESS allows me to work in many districts, which as a retiree who is mobile and enjoys traveling, is a big bonus. The unified dashboard allows me to see the open jobs for all of the districts where I work, can block days that I will not work, and is easy to use. Every time I have contacted ESS, the customer service has been exceptional.

Cons

ESS is a private company to which school districts outsource their substitute needs. There are some folks that believe that all districts should hire their subs through their own HR department and not outsource. For a mobile sub like me, having to register individually with districts would be a huge disadvantage.
