Pros

In the ten years that I have known Earth Day Network, I can’t imagine a more hard-charging, creative, and always current organization that has the welcome mat rolled out for those with an entrepreneurial spirit, especially those with passion for the environment. It is a great place to build one’s career – management is always open to new ideas and chances are if they are good they will be implemented. There is also a high degree of strategic freedom within a framework to do what is best for your team. Actually, it is fun to work there and at times can even get zany around big events so hold onto your hat and be prepared to pitch in.

Cons

Cannot think of too many.

Very difficult to work here

Pros

The environmental movement is worth fighting for and I thought this was the organization leading the movement.

Cons

The work environment is horrible. There is no real direction - or too much conflicting direction from management. Goals change every week and no documentation or systems are in place to refer to if someone has questions. There is no process or training. I felt completely lost, useless, and unable to succeed. Partnerships are non existent. Or maybe I just never actually heard about them. The pay is very low. The hours are very long. There is no teamwork.......so don't expect much help. And no one can explain what this organization actually DOES!?!?!

Advice for Interns

Pros

The organization here is awful (see bellow) But, uniquely for interns, this may be seen as an advantage. Consider what projects / skillset you wish to develop while here, assign yourself those projects, and question any project you don’t wish to do. It’s often busywork. But, if proactive, you can tailor this experience to be your personal benefits.

Cons

The only thing EDN has to offer in leverage during partnerships and donors is reach and networking, but there is barely anything to show for it. Organized information for key campaigns such as education don’t exist. The data that is circulated is really poorly managed and has no central hub. Entire spreadsheets gathered over months and years (largely by unpaid interns) are wasted because there isn’t a standard way to manage/access them across departments. For Interns, specifically - HR did not offer an obvious path for interns to take charge of projects that would actually help them. As a result, myself and other interns have somewhat felt that after completing various busywork, their time was wasted. They did not personally benefit/learn, or even seen their work utilized in a greater context because poor organization led to canceled and conflicting projects. Interns aren’t compensated enough money for metro travel expenses, despite being promised that those expenses would be covered. Interns were assigned to the room with roaring conditioner and no windows, even when a quarter of the office being heated / lit up for noone.
