Pros

The pay is great that’s why people stay as long as they can.

Cons

ZERO work/life balance. You work overtime, for no overtime pay. You start the school year in early August for unnecessary PDs and end the school the same time as the DOE. This causes burnout very early in the school year. The leaders are UNQUALIFIED (most don’t have the education or credentials for school leadership, nor have experience as classroom teachers, or have only taught one grade for a year or two) and don’t listen to the teachers who obviously spends the most time with the students. Many teachers have vocalized their opinions about the curriculum and what their students need and it never changes, only the teachers just gets scolded by leadership and make it their fault. There’s no partnership. They only care about the test scores & their numbers, they over test and over work the students. Many of the students have intense behavioral problems that the leadership handles by giving them candy and sending them back to class. They claim to focus on anti-racism yet they do nothing to address certain behaviors, but instead enable them, that will unfortunately lead our students towards the school to prison pipeline. It’s disheartening to see it. They also let parents threaten and speak to their teachers and staff however they want to, to the point where i’ve seen a few teachers break down. I’ve seen students get away with bullying other students because leadership doesn’t want to deal with the difficult parents, which causes those students to eventually leave. They give you several PTO days, but when you take them the leaders have meetings telling teachers to hold their fellow teachers accountable for calling out and glorifying coming in sick. It’s always been a revolving door for teachers, as well as senior management, it’s only getting worse.

Thank you for your feedback. We understand that work/life balance and leadership concerns are critical issues, and we’re actively working to address them. We’re reviewing our leadership development and feedback processes to ensure that teacher input is valued and that leadership is effective. We’re also reassessing our approach to student behavior and support to improve outcomes and create a better environment for both staff and students. Your comments about PTO and retention are noted, and we’re exploring ways to enhance our support systems. We appreciate your insights and are committed to making necessary improvements. Although you are a former employee, we'd be happy to continue the conversation at our jobs@ehtp.org Thank you East Harlem Tutorial Program

Pros

Their mission which they have no idea how to follow or achieve. Anti-racists does not mean lower the bar and let kids get away with murder! Nor does it mean promote POC even if they are completely unqualified and already proven incompetent.

Cons

Severely underpaid women (sketchy budget) Incompetent/Unqualified management No support No consistent systems Safety concerns Understaffed

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Moreover, thank you for your commitment to EHTP for more than 4 years. You have raised some very crucial points and points we are constantly reflecting on and attempting to improve. We want to always set high expectations for students, teachers and leaders throughout the network; and through shared understandings of restorative justice and anti-racist practices is how we hope to not only get there but excel. Our leaders are often engaging in professional development, external academic and practical training to improve their practices. The feedback you have provided definitely helps us to operate in humility, reflection and courage to do and be better in how we embody everything we stand on for our students, families, our communities and for each other. We'd like to encourage you to provide further feedback to jobs@ehtp.org.

Pros

Mission-driven organization started in 1958 by a Jewish woman to connect local students with equitable access to education.

Cons

Ironically, the realization of the organization's anti-racist mission is not currently inclusive of Jewish experiences, despite discrimination being explicitly prohibited in the employee handbook. I was encouraged to stay remote and not given office space in order for leadership to not have to address politically charged paraphernalia that was allowed to stay up for months at a colleague's neighboring desk, where children and staff were tacitly indoctrinated in anti-Jewish sentiments. This colleague also refused to shake my hand on my last day, reflecting the hostile work environment. Over my last six months of employment I wanted to not have to engage in the political discourse that was sometimes made mandatory in "equity team" led meetings and just wanted to do my job. I never brought up these topics and explicitly asked to not have to engage my colleagues on this level. Instead of enforcing the handbook rules, my messages to leadership were met with "this is above my pay grade" and inaction from leadership. However upon leaving, the icing on the cake was HR bringing in an external person and proceeded to try to gaslight me about any of this happening, but I have thorough documentation that has been shared with the DOE. I left because I did not feel safe or welcome as a Jewish person and hope management takes explicit steps so that others don't experience this. Grateful to have left this organization.

Dear Reviewer, Thank you for your feedback. Our team receives your input with much consideration. We love our students as well as our staff and we pride ourselves on #BuildingLove here at EHTP, ensuring that every member of our community feels like they are a part of a second family of their own. Our school leadership and operations teams make considerable efforts to ensure the safety of students and staff on all of our school sites. All of our classrooms are well equipped with proper sterilization cleaning tools and hand sanitizer to prevent the risk of spreading COVID-19. We've seen spikes in cases at all the same times that the city as a whole has, and never had an indication that spread was happening at school (cases have largely been disconnected in time and space, suggesting that students are infected outside of school). We provide staff testing three times per week, we've been more aggressive than DOE policy dictates in implementing measures like classroom closures, virtual learning, and restricted campus access. As a result of our efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 cases in our schools, our positivity rates have remained, throughout the pandemic, dramatically lower than the surrounding neighborhood and the city at large. We hope that this information provides some insight into our growth and development here at EHTP and we wish you the best of luck in your career development! Stay safe and be well.

Pros

The environment is welcoming and very nice. The work is also very meaningful and you can see the impact you make on students.

Cons

Often times management is able to cross lines, boundaries, or micromanage. When trying to address the issue, there isn't much of a solution.
