Pros

The pay is great that’s why people stay as long as they can.

Cons

ZERO work/life balance. You work overtime, for no overtime pay. You start the school year in early August for unnecessary PDs and end the school the same time as the DOE. This causes burnout very early in the school year. The leaders are UNQUALIFIED (most don’t have the education or credentials for school leadership, nor have experience as classroom teachers, or have only taught one grade for a year or two) and don’t listen to the teachers who obviously spends the most time with the students. Many teachers have vocalized their opinions about the curriculum and what their students need and it never changes, only the teachers just gets scolded by leadership and make it their fault. There’s no partnership. They only care about the test scores & their numbers, they over test and over work the students. Many of the students have intense behavioral problems that the leadership handles by giving them candy and sending them back to class. They claim to focus on anti-racism yet they do nothing to address certain behaviors, but instead enable them, that will unfortunately lead our students towards the school to prison pipeline. It’s disheartening to see it. They also let parents threaten and speak to their teachers and staff however they want to, to the point where i’ve seen a few teachers break down. I’ve seen students get away with bullying other students because leadership doesn’t want to deal with the difficult parents, which causes those students to eventually leave. They give you several PTO days, but when you take them the leaders have meetings telling teachers to hold their fellow teachers accountable for calling out and glorifying coming in sick. It’s always been a revolving door for teachers, as well as senior management, it’s only getting worse.

Pros

The students and families are the only pros.

Cons

The CEO and senior staff do not have a clue about what is going on. Staff are given the bare minimum and are always struggling. Always high turnover. Every single day is stressful. The same issues come up all the time. People always point fingers and nothing gets done.

Pros

Great team of people who genuinely care about the mission and the community. There is a strong sense of collaboration and everyone works hard to move the org forward. They also have a great time off policy that helps with balancing home/work life especially if you have a child.

Cons

The team is stretched thin and additional support would make a big difference in managing the workload and continuing progress.

Pros

Few great people that work very hard to remind the organization what the mission is which is in service to the East Harlem community, although it seems like that commitment is long gone.

Cons

No strategic plan or vision. Consistent fires for over 4 years with high turnover and deeply unhappy coworkers who feel trapped because they really care for families and scholars but senior leadership fails to recognize that without a long-term plan or strategic vision everything feels like it's in vain and is to keep the lights on. Anti-racist is just a brand to this organization - used to be an every day part of the fabric of the org but after 2020 it became lip-service, just ask anyone in senior leadership what it means to be anti-racist and you will probably get 7 different answers. Anti-racism is not diversity or multiculturalism. It's a commitment to undoing the ways in which white supremacy is imbedded in structures and practices that create inequitable conditions for people of color. I wouldn't recommend working here if you would like to feel supported in your role. You will not get that here.

I like it here

Pros

We have strong leadership that feels like they're in it for the long haul. I like the direction we're headed in and I have confidence in the leadership to get us there. We are not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but there is good work happening here and we've got a bright future. Most of the people who work here, especially those who have been here 5+ years, have a thorough understanding of the community and its unique characteristics and needs. In my experience, we treat kids, families, and each other with a baseline level of respect and care.

Cons

We still have work to do on truly being an antiracist organization. We've made significant progress over the past few years but we still need improvement in what being an antiracist organization looks like in the day to day operations. Everyone in the org should know and understand what it looks, sounds, and feels like to operate through an actively antiracist lens. I know it's a journey not a destination but I hope we continue to hire folks with that top of mind.
