Pros

Company is going through major business model change to catch up with the rest of the industry. 30% of employees approaching retirement age in the next few years. Therefore, lots of opportunities within the company. However, local connection or commitment to the location (Kingsport, TN) has become a major consideration for any career opportunities. Performance is secondary or even third tier consideration for career progress.

Cons

Company HQ located in a very remote area, Kingsport, TN. Most of the people in the company still have a small town mind-set. Company policy rewards loyalty instead of performance. For example, if 2 people doing exactly the same job, one could have an office and makes much more than the other just because the prior has been with the company for longer time. This is such a disappointment for a global company. Another thing has bothered me personally is Eastman likes to get in employee's personal life. For example, almost anyone who joined the company and moved from outside of Kingsport, TN will be asked when they are going to buy a house in town. This question will be asked many times for years until they actually bought a house. I have seen people at all levels, even Director level, to be excluded from promotion because of not having a house in town. Many people have left the company because of lack of career development opportunities.

Pros

Good money, Training is good but could be better

Cons

Management breathing down your neck. No room for errors or you will be wrote up and reviewed for termination with little recourse. Strict culture which can be unnerving. Watch out for other employees. They will throw you under the bus if it gets them ahead.

Inconsistent Management & Unneccessary Focus on Short-Term Growth

Pros

There are plenty of friendly coworkers. The working environment is a collaborative one. There are plenty of opportunities within the company due to the multiple product and business arcs.

Cons

The compensation and rating system at Eastman is not great. Employee compensation is not reflective of job responsibility increases and focuses mostly on "years of experience," with some differentiation based on performance. Therefore, there is high likelihood of being moved from one job to another within the company and being told that it is a lateral move, despite the fact that the amount of responsibility and effort required to meet performance goals greatly increase. Management has no answer to the question as to why there is no difference in compensation in this regard. This type of management would tend to make working hard for a company that doesn't appropriately reward it's employees exhausting and frustrating. Additionally, there has been a large focus on large cost decreases within the company. The CEO has acknowledged the squeeze coming from investors on the need to maintain large single-digit growth. Some departments are feeling the pressures of being asked to maintain or even increase throughput, while reducing budget available to make improvements or repairs. This ends up leaving gaps that could significantly impact the company from a financial standpoint in the longer-term.
