Negatives far outweigh positives

Pros

Harmonious work environment, you will never hear yelling or swearing among coworkers. Good starting salary.

Cons

Lacking diversity, and the efforts to address are laughable. While they say there is no forced performance distribution, in reality, it coerced distribution; managers draw a line to meet the "suggested" distribution. Too much wasted effort on metrics to justify existence. Even the two pros are so extreme they end up being cons, need for consensus and harmony stifles creativity, empowerment, and challenging status quo, ultimately slowing change to a snail's pace. Good starting salary is quickly eroded by basically non-existent raises (once you account for benefit losses). Top heavy management, with senior management scared of shareholders. Unless you are a white, Christian, male, with stay at home wife and two kids, don't bother.

Great company but...

Pros

Job security Annual raises/bonuses There are some really great people to work with and build lasting relationships with Great managers Contribution to the company (United Way, etc)

Cons

1. Location: the company loses the potential for amazing talent because of its location. It's great for people who already have families but young, sharp professionals who come out here won't like it. If you're in sales, it might not be too bad because once you've completed your first year here you work from your home office. There's also a lack of diversity because of its location in a predominantly Caucasian area. 2. Pay an arm and a leg for insurance and still get a bill 3. If you come in as an non-exempt employee who plans on moving into an exempt role soon, you're on your own. It would be fine if this were the case for all employees but it isn't. Exempts are moved into positions regularly without having to look at the career site and their managers work together to make these transitions occur as quickly as possible. So if you're someone who has a lot of ambition and wants to keep growing in your career, do not come in as a non-exempt employee and think it will be easier. It won't. Two other things that demonstrates the divide between non-exempts and exempts are: You're told you will be able to apply for tuition reimbursement after working for the company a year but it doesn't end there. You MUST be an exempt employee to get it. If you're a non-exempt employee, you will pay that tuition out of pocket. There are also networking groups that meet frequently for luncheons and dinners where the eligibility depends on your exempt or non-exempt status.

Pros

Until recently Eastman has been an extremely stable place to work. In fact in the last two weeks I went to to 40 year's at Eastman anniversary parties. The starting pay is competitive. The work life balance is good. The area around Eastman is relatively inexpensive to live in. There are lots of opportunities for training and personal development. Overall, I like my job and enjoy Eastman.

Cons

In order to grow as a company Eastman has adopted common industry practices that are making it less attractive to work for. Recent times have seen drastic cuts in budgets and mediocre raises and bonus even though last we had record profits and exceeded expectations. Also, unless you are one of a select few, don't expect fast promotions or movement into management. Eastman attracts people by providing starting salaries slightly higher than its competitors, but keeps costs down be promoting slow and with mediocre raises. There is no other place like Eastman in the area, so you would have to move to find another decent engineering job.
