Good Work Experience If You Can Suffer The Bad Work Environment

Pros

Nice office location. Some good pieces of business. Solid name to have on resume. A few very smart/innovate employees.

Cons

Managers with no formal management training and no idea how to be an effective leader, advocate or mentor for their direct reports. Clique-ey staff who audibly gossip about fellow colleagues on the office floor, sometimes one desk away from the subject of their conversation. Seemingly frequent employee turnover and loss of business due to poorly run accounts and underwhelming mid- to upper-level staff. No work-life balance paired with below standard pay. Individuals in leadership positions who are discriminatory or engage in forms of harassment. Large chance of getting stuck on an awful account mix with no opportunity to voice your opinion or interest in other pieces of business. Opportunity for growth is completely hit or miss -- no consistency across accounts. Jealousy, un-friendly competition and in-fighting among the practice. Perfection in your actual day-to-day is not valued if you aren't also brown-nosing your more senior colleagues. Encouraged to collaborate across practices/specialties (mostly as a way to keep all revenue in house, i.e. using Edelman Creative Network instead of an external design vendor), yet working relationships across practices are notoriously bad/difficult. Overall, a negative atmosphere as a result of rude and lackluster people.

While I'm pained to read about your experience, I'm grateful you brought this to our attention. There are some very concerning aspects of your review and I urge you to consider reaching out to your local HR team or me directly (maria.okeeffe@edelman.com) to discuss, so we have the opportunity to investigate. I also want to make sure you know that preparing managers with the skills they need to effectively mentor and lead is a current priority, especially in New York with over 150 managers recently being trained on giving and receiving feedback in addition to training on navigating career conversations that occurred this past spring. I hope you'll experience positive benefits stemming from these efforts soon. Thank you again for sharing your feedback. Maria O'Keeffe, Executive Director, US HR

Pros

Benefits, flexibility, location, drinks, acknowledgement of the state of our community.

Cons

Lots of people trying to prove themselves with no real backing. Too many so called VPs and above who aren't experienced or ready to lead a team.

Pros

- You have an opportunity work with very smart people that come from a host of backgrounds (marketing, PR, advertising) - Transparent management (monthly all-hands) - It’s really a great place for an entry-level person to start and gain the most experience

Cons

- Tech is an unevolved practice with old guard clients, therefore aren’t winning business with emerging tech companies - For positioning themselves as an integrated marketing communications firm, Edelman tends to operate in very siloed practices that make it impossible to get anything done in a timely manner - The review process is horrific; would advise that new employees schedule weekly or bi- weekly meetings with your manager and archive copious notes to use when it comes time for you annual review (which feels like you’re writing a senior thesis) - As with any firm, Edelman is a revolving door. - Systematically an overall cold culture - Salary base pay is a joke (in comparison to what other Bay Area- based agencies offer) unless you have good negotiating skills.

Based on identical language shared in a Glassdoor review for Seattle, it appears as if you have submitted two reviews one day apart for two different offices. It would be helpful to better understand your concerns and their associated location if you're open to reaching out to me at maria.okeeffe@edelman.com. Maria O'Keeffe, Executive Director, US HR
