Pros

The physical office was nice; decent amenities with a nice location.

Cons

Eide Bailly is firm that is focused on growth solely through the acquisition of other CPA firms. Their strategy is to enter geographic markets and acquire other CPA firms simply to eliminate the competition for clients and employees. If you are unfortunate enough to work for a firm that is acquired by Eide Bailly, as I was, you can expect to have your compensation slashed, your workload increased, your benefits decreased, and an unreasonable requirement placed on you to bring in a set amount of new business each year. If this requirement is not met, you can expect to be harassed by the firm's management and even be threatened to be terminated. This firm cares little for its clients or employees, as the business model they use basically creates a situation where there is no where else for them to go. This model seems to works in small markets, like Reno, NV, but not so well in larger markets like Phoenix, AZ, where they cannot eliminate competition through acquisition. Another aspect of the miserable working environment is the fact this firm is very tolerant of males who sexually harass the females they supervise. During the time I worked there, I was told by multiple female staff about a manager who was harassing them. In each instance, I accompanied the staff person to the HR office and made sure the firm was made aware of what was occurring. However, while in any other workplace his actions would have resulted in this manager being terminated, Eide Bailly took only minimal action against him and he continues to work there while the female staff ended up quitting. I would not recommend this firm to any potential employee or client. In the two years I worked there I saw all the good talent of the firm I had been with for almost ten years leave. In my entire career in accounting, this is the worst group of people I have ever encountered.

Eide Bailly Response

We’re sorry your experience at Eide Bailly was not typical of our culture. Our staff matter greatly to us. Acquisitions are part of our strategy to grow the firm, and we strive to grow just as much organically while being good corporate citizens in every community we enter. While we can’t discuss individual cases, we take every harassment complaint seriously and investigate them fully. Employees are encouraged to follow our policy on harassment, which outlines several different avenues for reporting this behavior. We want our workplace to be one of fair, equal treatment and we continuously work toward that goal. Thank you for your feedback.

Run or stay, it doesn't matter

Pros

They give you an allowance to spend on anything. Good people work here, bad people also work here. Some people take public accounting seriously and some don't. You pick your crowd I guess

Cons

Just repeating what most people have said about public accounting. Hours are bad. Some people are cutthroat because they want to make manager, partner etc. Due to favoritism, people are promoted prematurely And leadership rewards people eating hours, although they say otherwise. There's always double meanings to what people say. Your protection relies on being on the right side of management. That's how the culture is and due to leadership supporting this culture, the type of people that last here are the ones who thrive in this culture. But going back to complaining about public accounting, they are stuck to how things are done. Due to accounting attracting risk averse and more conservative people, people stick to what they know. There's very little room for ingenuity because they want to do things the way things have always been done and trying to look like there's progress on the surface. But internally people are withering away, either in their conquest to prove they're the best in public accounting or the people who are coasting along because it's a job just like anything else and it's not the end all be all of life. At the end of the day, public accounting sucks, billable hours suck, some people are cool and some are okay and others are the worst people you'll ever meet. Just like any other workplace, pick your poison

Toxic Culture, Explosive Management, Discriminates Against Women

Pros

Decent perks/benefits for employees without dependents, and busy season isn't too bad, only 55-60 hours/week. There's rarely enough work to keep staff billable all summer. Co-workers are good, management is awful and toxic.

Cons

There is a toxic culture of gossip and belittlement-managers badmouth subordinates to other subordinates, and subsequently no one trusts each other. Management often explodes on staff in completely unprofessional ways, ie yelling, screaming, and cussing out staff until they are in tears. Women are frowned upon if they end up taking maternity leave during busy season, and during HR training on sexual harassment, managers/partners are heard making comments such as "well how's a guy supposed to get laid". Women are blatantly held to different standards than men. The career advising process is a joke and merely a box to check for managers. Your mentor will not take your requests seriously, and you will be placed in whatever industry you're needed at the time with no thought given to what you'd like to specialize in. Belittlement is the name of the game when it comes to management, and the explosiveness is led by the PIC. He's been reported to corporate, but they refuse to acknowledge his abusive management style.
