While none of the past leaders had much focus on employees well-being, Gail took an approach of driving employees to the ground by laying off thousands of people and thinning out benefits to the bare minimum in the name of ‘following the industry’. Thousands of people gutted leaving the rest to pick up the load. Severance packages went from lump sum payout based on the number of years worked to supplementing state unemployment amount. Vacation take home upon leaving shrunk to 1 week max. If you have any surplus, it goes unpaid. All of these changes were quietly implemented without employee input or feedback. She quietly dissolved company’s official motto ‘work-life balance’ and replaced with ‘let’s keep pushing’. Being virtually on the brink of losing your job, you never feel like discussing your workload or burnout with your manager as it paints a target on your back immediately. Work in the office is mandatory. Not only there’s a minimum number of office visits required, senior leadership monitors your visit weekly distribution.
