Toxic environment despite benefits and remote work - Digital Designer American Heart Association Employee Review

Pros

Benefits & work from home

Cons

Pay is not even close to being comparable with other organizations. I accepted the role based on it was a remote position and at times management was flexible. Over 12 years with the organization, my role as a digital designer expanded into print, product design and video however my title never changed as well as my pay structure. The demands are unrealistic and the stress from leadership trickles down to the “worker bees” causing a toxic environment. After years of complaints with HR, nothing was improved and bad behavior continued. This has been the only organization that allows physical assault and workplace bullying without any repercussions. The biggest upset was when a fellow coworker passed away from stress related cardiac issues and the organization “hid” it from the announcement.

Thank you for sharing insight into your experience. We’re glad to learn you enjoyed our benefits and working from home in your role, but we are highly concerned about the culture you describe, as this doesn’t align at all with the positive culture we work to build – a culture of integrity where everyone’s contributions are appreciated and rewarded appropriately. We’d like to hear more details from you, if you’re comfortable sharing. If so, please reach out to us for a confidential conversation.

Pros

Overall, a great company with a great mission.

Cons

Please take my advice and do NOT apply for roles at the Irving office, if you absolutely have to, make sure it is not the Heart Walk team specifically. Every single person in this leadership role especially the leader for the Heart Walk team is unprofessional, has a lot to learn, and clearly doesn’t know what traits to look for in managers or for themselves for that matter. They are not willing to support you if you have gaps in your role, there’s definitely favoritism amongst the team, you are expected to reach unrealistic goals that are unattainable, and they will make you feel and do things that will force you to quit. The amount of mental and emotional stress this team caused is something that ruined some of the best moments and times outside of work, because I was always anxious, stressed, and worried about this job and the team I worked under. You should never have to go home or wake up dreading your job, and this job, team and staff will do just that to you. There’s a reason more than half/most of the team isn’t even there anymore. RUN from this role, location and this team.
