Prior relationships and incompetent behavior often seemed to be the path to promotion. Worked on a project for a client who would repeatedly ask for no more touchpoints until deliverables were provided. Rather than listening to client needs, incompetent members of team leadership required us to spend hours on (internal and client) meetings talking in circles rather than doing the actual work. We would go to the client meetings, get laughed at and hung up on. While the client was being unprofessional, I do see why they were so frustrated. This cycle went on for months. Leadership on the project could not pick up on any nuance in the conversations w/client and would repeatedly propose directions that were often the opposite of what the client wanted. There were also issues with project team members being nepotism hires and not being willing to speak up to get the project back on track. A common theme was that team members who would never advocate or speak up were rewarded. These individuals wouldn't have to deal with the fall-out of not speaking up (extra unplanned hours, unwanted "sprints," impossible timelines, and other problems for more early career employees), but would get the benefits of continued opportunities and progression. A lot of "failing up" at this place.
