Pros

- Best culture I've ever experienced at a company. People are happy, helpful, and operate with integrity, which is important in our business. They're also intelligent and humble. - Leadership team is experienced, accessible, values and supports employees, and works towards solutions with transparency. This is especially important in times of instability (hello COVID-19)! - The hacker community is inspiring. We have a lot of work to do in this space, but we're in excellent company and making meaningful contributions to hacker education and to companies' security. - Our customers are amazing to work with, and span many industries, geographies, and sizes. If you're in a customer-facing role, there's no shortage of fun projects and problems to solve. - Fiscally responsible (from my limited visibility). Profitability and long-term growth are a company-wide focus, which makes me feel good about HackerOne's future prospects. The Employee Success team does a good job of balancing this with perks that people have come to expect at mature startups (wellness stipend, commuter benefits, 1x/week catered lunch, etc.). - Work-life balance and trust. You won't be micromanaged here, but you'll also be expected to do your work, and do it well. Remote and parent-friendly. - The company is doing more to develop people professionally: Management and interview training, well-executed performance review cycles, and career ladders with parallel growth tracks (manager and individual contributor).

Cons

- Cross-functional alignment and communication is a work in progress, but that's actively being addressed. - Pay is fair and on par with the market but if you're maximizing for a top-of-the-range salary, this may not be the right place (especially in the bay area). On the flip side, the people who join tend to be mission-driven and value culture, transparency, growth, etc. so they stick around. - No match on 401k. Goes back to the focus on fiscal responsibility while we're in the growth / maturity stage.

Pros

- The coworkers are genuinely amazing: smart, kind, and deeply supportive. Many people truly care about doing the right thing and helping each other succeed. - The mission is meaningful. Supporting the global community of ethical hackers is powerful, and the work has real impact on improving security across the internet.

Cons

- Since the arrival of the new CEO, nearly the entire C-suite has been replaced in under a year. This has created an environment of fear, risk aversion, and excessive CYA behavior. - HackerOne used to value transparency and open dialogue. “An honest question gets an honest answer” was more than a motto—it was lived. Today, people are afraid to ask honest questions, and answers are often vague corporate speak rather than real explanations. - A new AI engineer role was created with a pay band roughly 40% higher than existing software engineers. In practice, some software engineers are doing the same work for significantly less pay, which has caused frustration and morale issues. - The company once had a strong, people-first culture. That culture has eroded to the point where layoffs have occurred while employees were on maternity leave. - A newly hired VP in engineering focused on AI appears more interested in empire-building and optics with the C-suite than in empowering teams. Accountability is demanded without corresponding agency, and blame is often pushed downward when decisions don’t work out.
