I was one of two tech writers. Not for the product, for the entire company. And I think the other one left right after I did. This comes from the CEO himself: Technical Writing is not important. Now I do not know how a software company can compete without documentation. How do they expect anyone to know the product? It seems like the focus of the company is to shove a new product out the door just to meet some deadline, but then to never support it. The experience there went like this: product released without doc, customers cannot figure something out, support doesn't know anything about the product, so it gets escalated to development, where someone with knowledge explains how it works. This is completely unprofessional. The problem is that there is absolutely no training at all. If you start as a tech writer, you will be thrown right in to create documentation. I don't understand the product because I am new, so how can I write about it? There is no process for anything, and there's just a general lack of productivity at the place. Check out other tech writing positions in the area. $60, 70, and 90k are common salaries. At micros it is about half of this. Finally, there is no way to do work outside the 8-5 schedule, and they charge vacation or sick time for things like doctors appointments.
