Pros

- Good health insurance - excellent plans, 85% of premium paid by company - Stability - never had layoffs in 50+ year history. Firings are extremely rare and you basically need to be doing something illegal. I didn't see a single performance-based firing in my 8 year tenure, although I saw many cases where it may have been warranted. - Low stress if you have a certain mindset. For the most part you don't need to think about work when you're not at work.

Cons

- There are a thousand little quirks that frustrated me about Meditech but I suspect many of them are common to other corporate workplaces so I won't list them all here. Many of them are inconsequential. Many of the outstanding cons have already been addressed in other reviews. - The Pros I listed all have a flip side. Great health benefits with high company-paid premiums = large portion of your compensation package is healthcare, meaning salaries are generally lower than market rate for Massachusetts. - Stability/no layoffs/no firings = the workforce is managed through attrition when finances are tight (like they are now), which means the remaining staff are saddled with more work for no extra pay, an untenable situation which will eventually becomes permanent, further contributing to attrition, etc etc until equilibrium is reached. - Low stress if you have a certain mindset = if you don't care about your professional reputation and having the respect of your colleagues, then you can skate by with no adverse effects on your life, but if you do care about those things, then it can be pretty stressful sometimes when you have a lot of work to do and a finite amount of time in the workday. - As someone else mentioned, the culture has shifted. This is partially attributable to the pandemic which sent everybody home for over a year, upending the traditional workplace culture, and partially attributable to a change in executive leadership in early 2021. New CEO Michelle O'Connor doesn't seem to have the same family-friendly, laid-back attitude of longtime former CEO Howard Messing. Her style seems more apt to a public company with shareholder accountability, not a private company with a reputation for employee-first focus. Perhaps she will do a great job and is just off to a rocky start. Perhaps she doesn't even realize her start has been rocky. - Time Machine (proprietary time-tracking tool) has completely obliterated any perception of work/life balance among the ranks. Work/Life balance would previously have been commonly cited as a Pro. Now you are required to document every minute of your day and be subject to audit and QC. This was among the primary reasons I decided to leave after years of being very comfortable and not seeing any real reason to make a change. - Inconsistent messaging around the purpose of time tracking depending on the person you ask and (seemingly) the day of the week. They will say they need these data to determine how to best allocate resources across the company. I am hesitant to say this is a "lie" because they probably spout this line even amongst the leadership team, but perception is reality, and the perception is that you are constantly being watched. It is a universal performance management tool, and of course many employees do legitimately require a performance management plan, but that needs to be an individualized thing. - Limited opportunity for advancement, and the only real "advancement" you can make is into the ranks of middle management which are bloated with people who were just looking for the next step up and don't really have the skillset to effectively manage teams of people.

Pros

MEDITECH is surviving, which wasn't a certainty ten years ago. Considering the low starting salaries for greater Boston, the company tends to be less selective in who they hire compared to other employers. Even with the effect that AI is having on tech hiring.

Cons

The market was MEDITECH's to lose, and they lost it. Without HCA as a customer MEDITECH would be finished. Considerations for job applicants such as inclusiveness and work/life balance are largely irrelevant, as the company's long-term prospects for success are doubtful. MaaS subscriptions don't bring in enough money to make up for the business that was lost to market leader Epic Systems. I am a MEDITECH shareholder, so I see the financial reports. Although I'm pleased that dividends continue to be paid, they are draining the company of badly needed cash to fund a turnaround.
