Pros

You get to work with a lot of very smart people (as developers, designers, and PMs) It's one of the more fun places I've worked (ex: free beer, dogs at work, etc)

Cons

Over the last 5 years, the company has really changed. It now has a distinct lack of empathy for it's employees. More and more people who work there are just treated as "resources" and not individuals. The company also has no real direction. They've been talking about competing with companies like Accenture, but fail to actually make substantive moves in that direction. The end result is that sales, PM, and dev aren't aligned because there's not a clear vision that unites the company. Senior management is woefully unqualified to be running a company that is trying to compete with established consulting firms. I sat in the office of the CEO multiple times and walked away feeling less confident about the future of The Nerdery each time. Turnover has gotten really bad recently. A lot of the top talent that have been there for 6+ years have been leaving over the past year or two. It doesn't seem like that's going to change any time soon. Finally, communication from leadership is terrible. It consistently scores the lowest among employee engagement survey results. Partially that's because there isn't a coherent vision to communicate and partially that's because they have the wrong people in leadership roles doing the communicating.

Nerdery Response

This is Tom O’Neill. I appreciate the passion and great work you brought to the team over the years at The Nerdery. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed working with alongside the many talented people on our team, that feeling was mutual I'm sure. My greatest hope for our Nerds is that they feel valued as individuals and that they are inspired by where we’re headed as a company. Clearly I failed you in that regard. I'll take this feedback seriously as I continue to work toward improving personally. As you know, The Nerdery's product is our people. We'll continue to surround ourselves with passionate and talented people, empowering them to make impact in our client's businesses. Thank you for the time and talent you shared with us and best of luck in your future work.

Pros

One of my favorite things about working at Nerdery was how my job was different every day, kept me in my toes and kept my skills fresh and current.

Cons

Some of the departments lacked clear direction.

Pros

- Actual client work is fun and we don't typically work with clients who are really aggressive with consultants. - Still have the opportunity to be remote

Cons

- Leadership is poor and consistently reactive. - There has been no real plan to improve the sales pipeline for nearly 3 years, but don't worry the man responsible for that failure was recently hired as a CEO elsewhere. - Layoffs happen, but there are examples where Nerdery leadership laid off employees who asked difficult questions or challenged leadership's ideas (e.g., retaliation). - We no longer have domain experts. Instead leadership is an account executive with an inflated title who might be pleasant, but doesn't actually have the expertise to improve the work. - Benefits were good when I started and now they are abysmal.
