Pros

-You can pick your own hours, which is convenient if you travel within Canada and the US (only these countries) -Working with students is a pretty average experience. Kids of all kinds use the service, it's nice talking to them sometimes. -Managers are hit or miss. Some are helpful/kind, others micromanage and will email you or message you on Slack at all hours.

Cons

-You might be able to pick your own hours, but there's no guarantee how many you'll get. Marking a full week of 60+ hours can get you anywhere from 29 hours to zero. It's not dependable, and time is nonexistent from mid May until mid August, plus spring, fall, and winter breaks. -Shift transfers are virtually impossible to pick up. They come in barrages of hundred of emails per week and are snapped up within minutes. -Slack channel where you report to every day is not moderated, so expect your coworkers to post prejudiced content often, with no accountability. Many workers were fired in April without warning for complaining about different pay between Americans and Canadians though. It's clear what the company cares about, and it's not the kids or the workers. -Harassment on Slack and within chats with kids is not addressed at all. There aren't chat filters for the kids, and you have to have a picture of yourself posted; this gets tiring. It's more tiring when that harassment manifests as coworkers in your inbox with all manner of things to say. Upper management does not care at all. -Paper does not follow a discipline process before firing people. Beyond the mass firing previously mentioned, other tutors have been fired without warning after receiving good performance reviews. They hire too many people too quickly, and let the burden of their mistakes fall to the workers. -You might come to work here with an education, but don't be expected to be compensated for this. Also don't expect to be treated with dignity or respect if you're a minority.

Pros

Real remote flexibility here. They are embracing the technology we have to ensure our work life balance remains a high priority. You're trusted to manage your own time and get the job done without constant oversight. The bigger story though is the turnaround over the last year and a half. The new leadership has turned the ship around... before it fell off the map. The mission is clear now, and there's real room to help shape how we get there rather than crossing our fingers, closing our eyes, and hoping for the least worst.

Cons

Leadership communication is where things fall a bit short. We get the monthly all-hands and then... radio silence. I get it, priorities compete and there's a lot on their plate. But when the crew is the one actually rowing the boat, it helps to hear from the captain more than once a month. The occasional engagement via Slack, a little more visibility in between the big meetings would go a long way toward keeping everyone rowing in the same direction. We're all in this together - it's helpful to be reminded why a bit more often.
