Pros

A lot of the people who are NOT in leadership positions are fantastic people that I consider friends - Paper hires talent well. The flexibility was also nice; it was helpful not to be bound to strict 8-5 working hours.

Cons

Unfortunately, even though there is a lot of talent at Paper, it goes unappreciated and underutilized. Leadership at the company has openly said that since Paper is a "start-up" (that started in 2014, by the way), so they've had to "experiment with jobs." This was said in response to a question from a team member as to why they terminate talented employees with seemingly no rhyme or reason. The leaders of the company seemed to think this was a completely appropriate justification for playing with high performing employees' livelihoods, and it quite honestly disgusts me. If you don't want to worry every single day that you might join a meeting and see members of the HR team there to fire you without any indication or warning, even though, by all accounts, you've been performing well, then Paper is absolutely not worth your time or effort. I left the company willingly after watching this happen to far too many talented colleagues. Paper also likes to make a big show about how they are committed to equity in education, when they are actually simply committed to hitting certain number of activities on the platform. Tutor Managers are expected to use vast amounts of data to manage a completely unreasonable number of tutors (last I heard, every TM was responsible for managing over 80 tutors and counting), and Tutor Manager performance is tied to tutor performance. There is no way to effectively manage that many employees and maintain quality - you are set up to fail, and therefore, your tutors will likely fail, because you will not be able to coach your tutors effectively. Inevitably, many will fall through the cracks, which is unfair to Tutor Managers, the tutors themselves, and most of all, the students - the reason Paper claims we do everything. Students will not always get high-performing tutors, because the managers of those tutors do not have the time to coach them effectively on top of the many, many other responsibilities that are continuously heaped on their plates. At the same time, Tutor Managers are not supported in their growth or development and not given feedback because Paper thought it was a good idea to eliminate the role of our managers without any real plan forward. So, if you're keeping track, TMs are in a role that's expected to provide high quality and consistent feedback to a huge group of tutors, while receiving no managerial support or feedback themselves. Truly, save yourself a lot of anxiety, overwhelm, and burnout, and do not apply for this role (or honestly, any role) at this company. It is completely mismanaged across the board and is very likely going to crash and burn.

Pros

Real remote flexibility here. They are embracing the technology we have to ensure our work life balance remains a high priority. You're trusted to manage your own time and get the job done without constant oversight. The bigger story though is the turnaround over the last year and a half. The new leadership has turned the ship around... before it fell off the map. The mission is clear now, and there's real room to help shape how we get there rather than crossing our fingers, closing our eyes, and hoping for the least worst.

Cons

Leadership communication is where things fall a bit short. We get the monthly all-hands and then... radio silence. I get it, priorities compete and there's a lot on their plate. But when the crew is the one actually rowing the boat, it helps to hear from the captain more than once a month. The occasional engagement via Slack, a little more visibility in between the big meetings would go a long way toward keeping everyone rowing in the same direction. We're all in this together - it's helpful to be reminded why a bit more often.
