Pros
In an era of ever-shrinking community newsrooms, Patch has found a way to offer free journalism (an amazing public service) to readers while still remaining profitable and growing. Company actually invests back into its product/editorial teams unlike a lot of newsrooms. Pays way better and offers much more stability than most community newspaper jobs. Forward-thinking, also unlike many newspaper jobs. Super helpful, smart and fun colleagues. Management is supportive. Unlimited vacation and 401(k)/health care is quite good, especially compared to most journalism gigs! Regular training sessions led by colleagues with good tips. Best company culture of pretty much any job I've had.
Cons
Large beat sizes makes it difficult to do as much in-depth reporting. On the flip side, you are writing so much that you do a little bit of everything and end up working on lots of interesting stories. Busy and challenging, but on most days, that is a pro for me. Sometimes have to work long hours to cover all your bases. Working from home is not for everyone.
