Pros

Friendly people Dogs Snacks, beer, kombucha, cider, sparkling water and such and such Gym & parking subsidized Thoughtful office space for different types of work (Though still open floor plan) Fun events and personal development opportunities like Home Buying 101 or Pie day bake offs As with any company, your experience will depend on your team and leadership

Cons

Lack of clear direction leads to goals set at the beginning of the quarter that are never the same goals at the end. Often there aren't even clear goals set at either the beginning or the end. Attempts at career path opportunities and defining levels are inconsistent across the company Many changes to executive managment underway or recently made Lots of talking the talk, but less walking the walk Still a stigma around the subject matter which can make casual "so what do you do" conversations awkward Recent layoffs followed by many new open roles sends inconsistent message Quarterly employee reviews that have very little tieback to goals and no deeper annual review No real 360 review process

Thank you for this thoughtful feedback. We agree with a lot of what you said, and we’re working hard to make it better. The quarterly planning and goal-setting process that we launched in January is relatively new and we’re still working out the kinks. We’re also tackling employee reviews and career development to make them more consistent and helpful for both employees and managers. As for the staffing changes, we’re sorry that the messages seemed inconsistent. We tried to make it clear that the changes were about making sure we had the right people in the right jobs, and that we would be opening several new roles to that end. As you know, RealSelf is well-funded, so while we’re being extremely disciplined about performance management and controlling costs, we’re also investing in the business. As always, the people who work at RealSelf are proud of our mission to help people make smart, confident decisions about aesthetic procedures and self-improvement, and are committed to making a difference in people’s lives. To most of us, that’s the best part of the job, but we understand that it’s not right for everyone. Thank you again for your input, and we’ll continue to strive for improvement on all fronts.

Pros

Having lived through many eras of RealSelf leadership and team culture, I can honestly say that our current CEO and exec team are more committed to the company’s success than any previous generation of leaders. These are the biggest positives I’ve seen coming out of this change: True passion for making RealSelf amazing for our consumers and providers A clear strategic vision for modernizing our legacy brand and product, backed with resources to make it happen Laser focus on a viable, sustainable revenue growth strategy An expectation that everyone is working hard to meet our goals Opportunities for meaningful career growth that had been absent for a few years Big emphasis on a positive, collaborative culture focused on solutions and bold bets We’re in a growth phase, so it has the fast-paced energy of a startup. It’s so energizing now to work with a mostly new team of rockstars who truly want to be here and are pulling together to make RealSelf live up to its potential. We also have an inspiring mission to help consumers make smart choices about aesthetic procedures and connect them with providers who are actually qualified.

Cons

We’re a relatively lean team, and resources are not infinite. We have to be strategic and leverage AI to work smarter, sometimes making trade-offs to deliver what’s most important for customers and the bottom line. (Not a challenge unique to RealSelf, but worth noting.) Many of us also wear a lot of hats. This can be a plus in terms of learning the business and new skills, but it also means we have to operate broadly and not always as deeply as we may want. We have to think in terms of improving systems and savvy automation to ensure things don’t slip through the cracks. It can be stressful for those who are not used to context switching and driving multiple priorities at once. We’ve also inherited areas of legacy mess (code, old systems, etc.) that need some clean-up, but we’re no longer sweeping them under the rug. If you’re up to these challenges, RealSelf is a fantastic place to grow.
