Pros

The parts of this company that really shine are what keep most people extremely dedicated to what they do and remain unmatched at any other company in Seattle right now: * The brilliant people you get to work with. RealSelf has amazing talent on staff and nearly every department has someone who is an outlier at the top of their field. * IT readiness, support, and on-boarding. This team is on point and extremely friendly to boot - I will miss them dearly. * Fantastic People Team who provide helpful human resource support. It's worth noting that RECENTLY did the company recognize a need for change in the leadership team and this should be commended.

Cons

After being in business as a leader in the space for so long and relying on a business model susceptible to damn near everything, the company still struggles to find a clear direction forward to put in place a model for sustainable growth that serves both the doctors and the users seeking information. * The mission of arming users with un-biased information to enable them to make informed decisions is wholesome, but the execution is shoddy and shamefully doesn't support the mission. A site that claims to be an information market place instead prioritizes promoting paying doctors and treatments above all else. * Too many cooks in the kitchen. Oftentimes progress is stalled because the number of deciders for any given initiative vastly outnumber the executors and subject matter experts. This extends to the CEO who has on numerous occasions impeded progress by getting involved in trivial matters. * Connivery runs rampant - I've never experienced the level of toxicity, back-channeling, double-speak, cliques and clubs that I experienced at RealSelf. It's disheartening to feel like you're part of something special one day only to find out you've been scapegoated without the common decency or basic corporate etiquette or being approached directly. * The site... With all the talent on the product and engineering team, the site is still woefully behind where it needs to be at this stage in the life of the company. It's a case study in user experience and not in a good way.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback. It sounds like you enjoyed a lot of aspects of RealSelf. We also agree with a lot of what you said--not everything, but a lot. The business model is susceptible to various factors, but that’s true for almost every business. We’re testing a series of new approaches to more effectively connect consumers with doctors, and based on early signals, we’re confident that we're moving forward in the right direction. We’re also going re-architect the website front to back, with a focus on the consumer. This project is being led by one of our women technical product leaders, which in itself is a new approach for the company. We’re also digging into our planning and decision-making processes, with new leaders at the helm. As for the culture, we’ve been focusing on directness and open communication, rooting out any siloed and territorial behavior we find, including making further staffing changes. Of course we’ve got a lot of work to do, but we’re making progress. We agree that employees should be empowered, but the executive team also needs to provide clearer and more consistent strategic direction. It’s a two-way street. Thank you again for your thoughts. We appreciate them.

Pros

Having lived through many eras of RealSelf leadership and team culture, I can honestly say that our current CEO and exec team are more committed to the company’s success than any previous generation of leaders. These are the biggest positives I’ve seen coming out of this change: True passion for making RealSelf amazing for our consumers and providers A clear strategic vision for modernizing our legacy brand and product, backed with resources to make it happen Laser focus on a viable, sustainable revenue growth strategy An expectation that everyone is working hard to meet our goals Opportunities for meaningful career growth that had been absent for a few years Big emphasis on a positive, collaborative culture focused on solutions and bold bets We’re in a growth phase, so it has the fast-paced energy of a startup. It’s so energizing now to work with a mostly new team of rockstars who truly want to be here and are pulling together to make RealSelf live up to its potential. We also have an inspiring mission to help consumers make smart choices about aesthetic procedures and connect them with providers who are actually qualified.

Cons

We’re a relatively lean team, and resources are not infinite. We have to be strategic and leverage AI to work smarter, sometimes making trade-offs to deliver what’s most important for customers and the bottom line. (Not a challenge unique to RealSelf, but worth noting.) Many of us also wear a lot of hats. This can be a plus in terms of learning the business and new skills, but it also means we have to operate broadly and not always as deeply as we may want. We have to think in terms of improving systems and savvy automation to ensure things don’t slip through the cracks. It can be stressful for those who are not used to context switching and driving multiple priorities at once. We’ve also inherited areas of legacy mess (code, old systems, etc.) that need some clean-up, but we’re no longer sweeping them under the rug. If you’re up to these challenges, RealSelf is a fantastic place to grow.
