Inspector - Reactor Inspector US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Employee Review

Pros

Work life balance. Typical government laziness so it’s easy to cruise as much as desired. Good benefits.

Cons

The training program from new hires is antiquated and out dated at best. What was sold to me as a rigorous training program with high expectations to become a nuclear reactor inspector turned into a total blow off a self-paced study program. There are few deliverables for new employees, so it is hard to gauge success early on and how to become a polished inspector. Training consisted of shadowing inspectors in the field, which was often a hit or miss, and sometimes a total waste of time. Some inspectors are weeks away from retiring, and could care less if you fully understand all the aspects of the inspection program, but don’t worry, it still fully counts as your training experience and you’ll be held to it.
