Pros

The kids are amazing. Seeing them grow almost makes the awful day-to-day worth it.

Cons

Zeta advertises its excellent work culture, when in reality employees are pitted against each other, unprofessional gossip is rampant, and the rug could be pulled out from under you at any moment. Employees were told they would receive raises, then that was reneged upon; teachers were told in a meeting that they shouldn't complain about not receiving raises and that they shouldn't discuss their salaries because it was "unprofessional." The turnover rate is so high because although Zeta talks a big game about respecting its employees, it has failed over and over again to prove it through actions. They will keep asking more and more of you until your physical and mental health is in tatters and excuse the inevitable fallout with the excuse that this is a start-up school and not everyone is cut out to handle it.

Zeta Charter Schools Response

Thank you for your feedback; we are disappointed that you had such a negative experience. At Zeta, we are committed to creating and maintaining a strong, positive work culture, and we work hard to this end. We strongly encourage employees to raise any concerns they have directly with their managers. We also conduct regular anonymous employee surveys to understand employees’ thoughts, feelings, and experiences, evaluated against our adult culture goals. In each instance, we learned that we are doing many things right and also that we needed to make improvements—and we made real-time adjustments in response to what we learned. We know that the work demands much of our employees, even more so as a start-up of world-class schools. While we wish the work could be easier (and are working to create systems and resources to reduce the burden), it takes a herculean lift to ensure every child meets his/her highest potential. It is true that this work is not for everyone, but we work to support our staff to maximize employee success and joy. We take staff retention very seriously, particularly as we serve low-income urban areas where teacher retention generally is not where it ought to be. On salaries, we are pleased to have made adjustments this year to our salary scale to ensure we remain competitive in retaining as well as attracting top talent. We are committed to compensating our staff fairly and are not aware of a situation where anyone was promised a raise and not given one. We are deeply committed to our adult culture so that every person who works with us experiences our vision for a high-performing and positive work environment, where we row together as a tightly knit team in service of children. We appreciate the time you spent with us—thank you on behalf of the kids you served.

Pros

Working here is incredibly rewarding because you see the direct impact your work has on students and families. The mission is at the center of everything, and you’re surrounded by talented, passionate people who genuinely care. If you’re someone with grit, a strong work ethic, and a desire to make a difference, there are countless opportunities to grow and make an impact.

Cons

The pace can be intense, and priorities may shift as the organization continues to grow. This environment isn’t for everyone, but for people who thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven setting, it can be incredibly fulfilling.

Pros

What I appreciate most about Zeta is the way the organization invests in its people. There is a clear commitment to supporting employees as whole individuals, not just as professionals filling a role. Growth, wellness, and connection are built into the culture in intentional ways, and that support is felt in the day-to-day experience. The benefits are another standout. Zeta’s benefits package is generous and thoughtfully designed, and the organization subsidizes a significant portion of the cost. Having access to $0/month healthcare options is uncommon and reflects how seriously Zeta takes caring for its team. The people and mission also make this a very energizing place to work. You are surrounded by colleagues who are deeply committed to meaningful change and aligned around a shared purpose. Being part of that kind of mission-driven, positive environment is powerful both personally and professionally. I feel encouraged to bring my full self to the work, which helps me contribute at my best.

Cons

Zeta has a very high bar for excellence, and that is made clear from the beginning. This may not be the right environment for someone who is not prepared to stretch, grow, and consistently work toward ambitious goals. That said, the organization does not simply expect excellence without support. There are strong systems for coaching, development, and feedback to help team members meet that bar in service of the mission.
