Pros
Kids. that's really all I can say. I love kids and this was a chance to work with them after 5 years of working in the field in other cities.
Cons
I worked at The Children's Garden in the Pearl District of Portland. I made it clear from the very beginning of the interview process that I have a disability and must stick to part time hours for my health. Once I began work, by the 2nd day they were already pressuring me to take on more hours and using guilt tactics to make me feel as though if I didn't take them I was immediately replaceable. After about 6 weeks of working there COVID-19 restrictions came about. This wasn't affecting child care centers at the time. After requesting time to consult with my doctor about my health so I could keep everyone safe through all of it I was hounded for documentation of my visits, tests, and procedures, which I provided. But it never seemed to be enough. A week after I consulted with my doctor and made it clear to management that I had to stop being assigned or pressured into full time hours, I was "laid off." Even after being told only a few days before that my job was not at all in jeopardy. The lay off was effective immediately. They then told me they would contact me as soon as positions opened up again. I never heard from them again yet received emails from job finding websites that they were "urgently hiring" within two weeks of being me being "let go." I truly believe I was a diversity hire who became inconvenient for them and I hope their ableist views and intimidation tactics eventually catch up to them morally. Don't work here if you care about your own well being. If you're okay with selling your soul to people who don't care about you, go for it.
