Good company - changing culture

Pros

A mostly well-run privately held company. Financially very strong. Good services. Strong employee development. Good customer service.

Cons

The culture is changing. What was once a large company with a small family-run company feel is evolving into a corporate giant that is moving away from the values it preached for so many years. The mantra that if you focus on employees and customers first and profits will follow is going away. Most attention and money being spent is going toward anything that will result in profit. Employees need better tools and resources to be more efficient and able to handle the growth. The demands for greater profit are resulting in a cost cutting culture that ultimately affects the lower level employees. Do more with less and keep OT inline. The culture is changing and the employee focus is becoming unbalanced. EFM shouldn't let EHI's slip affect EFM employees.

Pros

Work environment is fun and most customers are polite. They move you around to a lot of stores so you tend to get to know everyone in rental and most who work there are pretty cool.

Cons

The MT&MA's job is to sell car insurance while helping customers rent cars. You are ranked against every other employee each morning. 95% of customers have their own insurance and therefore, don't need it! You are expected to sell to 30% and your sales and tenure are the only metric used to determine promotions. Employees are hourly workers who must punch in. You must work a minimum 50 hour week including weekends. You must conform to a business formal dress code even in 100 degrees. And yes, you will occasionally wash cars, in your best clothes, in 100 degree heat. At least the car preps get to wear t-shirts. If you can hold out for 4 years under these conditions (affectionately known as "the grind") you will be rewarded with a small 100 car branch in the exurbs where you can begin your real career in rental. From there it gets pretty good with salary, loaner cars, etc. Turnover in the first 2 years in Central Texas Group was about 80% due to this culture.
