Pros

Great colleagues. Usually you can feel good that you're doing the right thing and helping the environment and communities. It's probably one of the best jobs for an attorney because most days you can be done after 8 or 9 hours, no billables!

Cons

So much bureaucracy. Winds change with politics and you can lose control of an entire program. But there are times you work as hard as private practice attorneys and there is no parallel compensation structure - no bonuses, no easy way to be allowed to take time off outside of the leave accrual structure, which is only 4 hours per pay period years 1 - 3 in the government. When everyone is overworked there is no release valve, if there is a hiring freeze there is no way to add employees and the work piles up and still needs to be done.

Pros

Pay, Work-Life Balance, Benefits, Interesting topics

Cons

Senior Managers don't value individuals--they are just bodies, management makes up lies to harass you and encourage you to quit using 4711 Harassment Policy, management often vindictive and doesn't tell the truth, very political, antiquated technology and organizational culture. More CYA than actually mission achievement. It used to be great.

Pros

A job with the US Federal government remains one of the most secure positions in the US. The ability to have a 5% matching TSP (401k), pension, and government health insurance after retiring are among the key benefits that keep employees around.

Cons

Federal employees stay too long in their positions because they are difficult to fire. Bureaucracy is everywhere and red tape prevents things from being done in a logical way.
