A good non-profit corporation with cultural swings and cliques

Pros

Great benefits and competitive salaries; Operational results appreciated by the Texas power market stakeholders for its overall performance in support of the Texas ERCOT power market [Market Participants; PUCT; Texas Legislature; International interests].

Cons

Leadership is shallow in working through breaking down silo culture between business departments. Progress is being made but slow and is hampered by political play between Vice Presidents. There is a need for top management to push reform through the VPs to put action behind words. Management level teams become frustrated for lack of executive level support for creative and innovative ways to use existing resources to collaborate and metric performance across teams in accomplishing highly technical and process improvements. The lack there of leaves the organization subject to potential failures in responsibilities during state power emergencies having to be in a reactive and less optimal responsive mode.

Pros

Lots of bright, engaging people to work with. There are always new projects to get involved in. Lots of potential for self-driven individuals to work in areas that interest them even if it is outside of their comfort zone. Good mix of diversity in the workforce.

Cons

With some exceptions, there is a big difference in the quality and effectiveness between mid-level and senior/executive management. There is oftentimes an inequitable division of work within departments, with more capable individuals relied upon to pick up a greater workload than others. While this seems to be expected with any difference in capability within a workforce, there is very little interest in developing less-capable individuals to a point where they can contribute more effectively, which fosters resentment between co-workers. There is very limited guidance from most supervisors/managers other than 'get the job done' and 'here is the next job'.
