Pros

Flexible hours. Good worklife balance.

Cons

Stressful culture with a lack of clear vision and guidance from the top down. All leaders have been there a while and disconnected from teams. As others noted, it is a toxic culture where people are fakely nice, management does help grow and guide their team, and leads to burn out. Hr has little actual power in the process so employees aren’t protected against cruel managers.

Pros

Arguably the most ethically positive place to work within big tech; director-level folks encourage work that improves our impact, not just (and even sometimes in opposition to) our bottom line, though with some exceptions. Generally very high-quality benefits, competitive pay, and flexible policies. Company-wide "breaksgiving" days off every month or two on top of standard holidays/vacation time. Good work/life balance. My immediate management chain genuinely cares about my wellbeing and career prospects. Remote culture was stronger than most places even before COVID, which will likely enable success for the split remote/in-person working future. Comparatively high performance on DEI and making space for marginalized identities. Draws in and keeps top talent from larger tech companies. AI/ML systems are impressive, but leave much room for large employee impact through innovative improvements. Blameless culture and brilliant people in the engineering org.

Cons

Recent significant cuts to sabbatical policy, even after employee-complaint-driven softening of policy changes. If you're an Etsy purist, certain resource allocation choices may seem to prioritize short-term profits over long-term brand reputation and maintaining what makes Etsy unique. Some hidden insider knowledge for best practices and tips around performance reviews and promotions, leading to inefficiencies/biases in the procedures that were built to prevent them.

Thank you for providing such thorough feedback. It’s very meaningful to us to know that the energy we’ve put into providing competitive benefits and pay, identifying opportunities for rest, tangible DEI commitments, and an inclusive remote work culture have all impacted your experience. It’s also inspiring to hear what an active and supportive role your management is taking in your development. Your comments regarding recent changes made to benefits, and equitable access to performance reviews are valuable. Just recently we announced enhancements to our benefits offerings, influenced by employee feedback, program utilization, and market trends. Additionally, we’ve hosted sessions led by our HR team during which we walked employees through our performance review process, discussed the steps for ensuring equitable considerations for promotions and pay increases, and opened the floor to live questions. We’re committed to ensuring equity of career progression at Etsy and transparency about those processes. Thank you again.

Pros

Etsy has a welcoming culture and their benefits are amazing.

Cons

There is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to how career advancement works at this company however, while in some areas of work you may be promoted based on the quality of your hard work, there is a definitely a problem with favoritism and getting positions based on social connections and popularity within the company versus solely based on quality of work.

Thank you for this feedback, and we’re glad that our focus on inclusive benefits and a welcoming culture have contributed so positively to your Etsy experience. However we’re concerned about your comment around career advancement. We certainly do not support favoritism as a tool by which to award upward mobility, and an equitable and fair promotion process is a key pillar to the program. Management and HR are trained and available to support any employee who feels that these standards have not been upheld, and to ensure equity throughout the company and specifically the program. We encourage you to reach out to your HR Business partner – whose information you can find on the Intraknit – for confidential assistance.
