Be Prepared

Pros

Job itself is not hard, if everything worked the way it should.

Cons

Be prepared to be left by yourself with no life line. DTLs and DMs are always “out of pocket” or unreachable when you need help, and when you do ask for help, you’re ignored. You’re expected to put in hard work and sweat into a thankless job. Upper management does nothing to motivate employees, and favoritism runs rampant across the company. Everyone acts like they’re in high school. Even if you do your job by the book, if you aren’t meeting the KPIs or you aren’t one of the “favorites” be prepared to be treated like so. HR is also not helpful, the company makes it hard to even speak with a rep and there’s zero consequences for anything. Customers can be as horrible as they want and be rewarded for it. They can cuss you out and assault you, but the minute they escalate to a DTL or DM, they get what they want and you’re left to pick up the pieces. They want you to value the customer who just threatened you because they want their money. Hard to feel motivated to stay at a company that doesn’t value their employees well-being or safety. Pay is also unfair across the board, there is definitely a gender-wage gap.

It's not the worst

Pros

Schedule is pretty consistent, and you have a fair amount of autonomy since upper management isn't physically there most of the time (store managers technically don't have any authority over assistant managers). Also the job is pretty easy once you learn all of the policies and get the sales process down. It's not hard but there can be a lot to do especially if you're at a busy location (you're a receptionist, retail manager, sales person, janitor, and facility manager all at once). If you consistently keep up with everything though you can have a lot of free time which is nice.

Cons

Pay is not good for the amount of responsibility you have (I'm getting paid just under $20/hr as an SM) and any bonuses are heavily taxed. There is definitely a gap between what different genders get paid. They also expect you to keep your wages a secret even though it's literally illegal to enforce that. Little to no overtime available. They may have you work at different stores (especially if you're an assistant manager) so it can be a long commute. Also be prepared to work alone most of the time because there's a high turnover rate and staffing is limited. They also expect you to get 10 google reviews a month which is a hassle You'll also be expected to help out other stores in your district, which is okay but "helping" often turns into doing someone else's work for them & cleaning up after them with little to no reward. Also unsurprisingly... with it being a customer service position, obviously it can be challenging dealing with customers who have little to no regard for you as a human being.

Pros

At the corporate level, employees are able to have a good work-life balance and career growth. Extra Space does a great job of having an inclusive workplace.

Cons

Pay and benefits are okay. There is potential career growth but pay increases are minimal. Upper management is really against remote work; depending on your team, you might be required to be in the office 4-5 days a week.
