Upper management places too much focus on metrics and not supporting the people who work at properties. Too often, you are left working a site alone with last minute call offs or not enough staff to provide you the help that you need. Company culture has moved in the direction of being totalitarian. Some customer can be erratic due to drug use, which can be scary. There is fear of coming into contact with dangerous substances when having to enter a customers storage unit due to our auction process (Or for any other reason...). Pay is relatively low for the market considering cost of living has gone up exponentially, but pay has stayed low. There are not that many holidays that are recognized, so you will be stuck working on most holidays. Facility audits are intense and stressful. There are many opportunities for failure in sections of the audit that are out of your control. There is still no sick leave and management just claims that this is all been rolled into one large amount of PTO.

While Extra Space Storage may seem like an appealing company on the surface, it's one to approach with caution. The rapid growth hasn't been matched with proper scaling, leaving the company stretched thin. Leadership operates with a small-business mindset, continually applying growth strategies that are unsustainable at the current scale. The employees are truly incredible, some of the best people you could hope to work with. However, this creates a false sense of culture that masks deeper issues. Beneath the surface, there's a company culture that leans heavily on personal relationships, which can feel like manipulation to keep up appearances Upper management operates like a "cool kids' club." If you're not part of their inner circle, your voice simply won't be heard, no matter how much data or how many well-thought-out recommendations you bring forward. They're out of touch with the real work needed to support their ever-growing initiatives and dismiss the concerns of mid-management about morale and workload. Burnout is seen as a weakness rather than a signal of an overloaded system, with management implying that those affected simply don't work hard enough.
