Pros

Opportunity to work at home and remotely.

Cons

So many downsides lately. The new sick time policy is a joke. As a 4 day/10 hour worker, I have to work 4 months to earn one day of sick time. Regular 8 hour workers have to work 3 months. I have never had disciplinary action for attendance in my 10 years with the company until they updated the policy. They claim the change was to help us, but it's quite obvious it was to make it harder to call out. God forbid you catch the flu and need more than a day of recovery. With record profits for the company, our executives are seeing huge pay increases, yet the lower level employees are technically making less than we used to with the rising costs of living. The technology issues are worse than ever. It takes weeks to get anything fixed and we are the ones that deal with the customers' backlash over it.

Pros

Extra Space used to be a wonderful place to work. Very balanced. The company expected good work, but they also supported their people and did things the right way. That has mostly ended.

Cons

As I mentioned, Extra Space has changed a lot as a workplace. They seem to be pushing sheer quantity of work in many departments. Metrics are all that matter, and they're usually metrics that track rate of work--not impact. I don't know if they're trying to imitate Amazon, but that is the kind of change they are making across the board--industrializing every facet of work so they can squeeze all the value they can out of their people. What they're losing in that is the passion and ownership that made their workforce great. Extra Space was a top performing company for years, but they seem to be slipping, and I think employees are beginning to look elsewhere. I see Extra Space having significant retention, engagement, and performance issues down the road. Communication between management and employees is really poor. They're changing a number of departments without explaining anything to people. "Anything" may sound like hyperbole. It's not. Extra Space used to have a wonderful feeling. People were part of a team and did good things together. It was great. Now it feels like an assembly line, where the quota is all that matters. It's a shame.

Pros

A fast paced environment with little down time. A workplace with many goals to achieve and to track with a workplace balance that is exceptional.

Cons

Field employees are rarely given their chance to move forward in this company causing them to lose internal talent. A talent drain with field employees has been extensive across the board with few high performers, causing the company to charge far more than the market value of units and goods to make up for the talent drain of their field employees. The only reason it's top 90 of 100 companies in the US on Glassdoor, is that it asks its employees to review the company positively in exchange for gift card chances. I would not recommend this job to friends or family members as they over manage their expectations of employees and pay below the industry average. For an example if your slightly overweight, you will be looked down upon and be told that you need to meet the company image. You can take your complaint to HR but they will do nothing if you have nothing in writing. If you get too old, in a corporate position, they try to push you out even if you perform to a high standard, which is around 50. They'll hire district managers that cause multi million dollar class action lawsuits and fire an entire district worth of employees without just cause but keep them in line to be senior district managers. Any other workplace would remove these people but Extra Space Storage embraces them.
