Pros

I had one district manager in my almost 8 year career that had a sense of professionalism and looked for opportunities to inspire growth within his district. He inspired his staff to aspire to grow with the company.

Cons

This company needs to take better care of providing opportunities for employees to earn bonuses and opportunities for growth.

Pros

Many great employees and sound management. Remodeled offices, average pay, benefits, stable employment.

Cons

Serious lack of corporate training and onboarding of employees, no career management, poor succession planning, inconsistent and inadequate talent management, lackluster benefits, flagrant violation of FLSA overtime pay for employees earning incentives, and not a healthy environment for employees seeking better pay and upward mobility. High turnover rate among mid level management.

Pros

I was lucky to live and work on a beautifully maintained property for most of my time with ESS. The job is nice for people who like to step away from the desk and want a little physical activity during the workday. My apartment was large, in a great location, and nicely kept by the previous occupant who had lived in the place for around 10 years. This location and the nice apartment were really the selling points for the job. The customers at this location were really great and fun to assist. The ESS training program is a really integrative and very well organized.

Cons

The job is really little more than a glorified janitor and/or maintenance position, even though they slyly call it a "Management" position. Yes, you do have opportunities to practice sales skills with the customers, but this is a very small portion of your overall workload. Even at a well-maintained property like where I typically worked, the janitorial duties are at least 75% of your daily tasks. Forget about it, if you get a property that is not well-maintained. The company does not always promote from within, as they would have you believe at hire. The tipping point for me came with the opening of 2 new properties in my area. I saw veteran employees in our district get passed over for promotions by new hires who had zero experience in this field. It seems the District Training Leader's relationship with the District Manager can have a great impact on employees' ability to gain promotion. If a DM doesn't like the DTL who trained you, then there's little hope for upward mobility. If you want a low-stress manual labor job, and you have low expectations for "moving up" in the company, this is good place to stay. For me, this was just a place to work with a decent apartment until I moved onto a better job.
