Pros

I have colleagues I deeply respect and really like as people. I enjoy being at the office and I'm not (so) sad when it's Monday morning. But it is a huge organization so it depends on your department. Also the benefits, as others have noted, as are good as it gets in our industry and better than many of our competitors. And I enjoy working in Dupont Circle.

Cons

With a new CEO, we may have some hope for a positive emergence from the mess of the merger, after which morale dropped like a rock. Waffling on decisions about restructuring the company has led to confusion. The movement toward field office-centered program management is probably a wise move, but it does mean fewer positions at HQ in Washington, and there is no sugarcoating that.

Zero growth potential or job security

Pros

They have good health benefits and flexible work hours, which is great for parents! And, for the most part, everyone is very nice. Very very friendly place for mothers and the lgbt community. Strong support system and many extracurricular activities -- sports teams, cooking groups, parent groups, etc.

Cons

There is zero growth potential or professional development. They never promote from within. There is no/little job security.. and when they fire, it's in the most horrible way with staff being escorted from the building at 10am without warning. The organization is inefficiently run and horribly managed... so. much. waste. Most of the "experts" aren't really experts and are given more weight than they should have.. and most of their knowledge is years out of date because, again, they don't believe in professional development or promoting from within.. so you have the same people from 10, 20, 30 years ago running the place with the same, now outdated, knowledge they had 10, 20, 30 years ago.. Also, staff is never properly informed of changes in policies and procedures, which can create a lot of stress. They don't believe in their young people!
