Pros

I did not wake up one day deciding that I needed to go into insurance for a living. However, when an exciting opportunity arose to work for FM Global, I took it! Only later would I come to understand that I had made one of the best career moves of my life. FM Global is a very successful insurance company that shares it successes with its clients/policyholders and its employers. The company is well run and profitable thanks to its unique business model that applies research and engineering underwriting for the benefit of protecting its clients' commercial property. This formula has helped FM Global gain attention around the world and is a source of great pride for its employees. FM Global enjoys long-term partnerships with its employees, much like its clients. It's not unusual for employees to spend their entire careers here, and employee longevity is an outcome of the happiness and professional rewards employees find in working for this company. Benefits at FM Global are among the best, including a private retirement pension in addition to a well-matched 401K plan. And, in the challenging 2009 economy, FM Global continued to issue pay raises to its employees, as a result of its successful business model. This is a well-run company which challenges and holds its employees accountable for its success. If you're looking for a stable company and a rewarding career, look no further than FM Global!

Cons

FM Global, by its nature of being an engineering-based insurance company, tends to afford the most career growth opportunity to employees with engineering degrees and backgrounds. An individual with an engineering background has unbridled growth opportunities at this company. That said, with the engineering industry largely populated by men, women without engineering degrees will find it challenges to climb to the highest levels of FM Global. However, if that's not your goal, ANYONE can find a rewarding and exciting career at FM Global!

Pros

Work from home, very flexible hours, independence, great training, travel, and experience. You get a list of a accounts to service and it is your responsibility to get them done by the deadline, from start to finish. You must talk with clients on a daily basis, arranging visits and educating them about loss prevention. There is a lot of training provided in communication and persuasion to help all engineers communicate effectively with clients. Training is intense and will take a total of about 16 months. Classroom and hands on training takes place in the east coast and all expenses are paid. Every engineer gets his/her own AmEx Corporate card and traveling is always enjoyable.

Cons

If you don't like working from home, traveling daily, an interest in property loss prevention or the insurance industry in general, then motivation becomes difficult.

Pros

1. Family/Work life balance. -FM Global practices what it preaches with respect to promoting a well balanced work/family life. It allows for flexible working hours and management is very sympathetic when personal time is needed and requested. 2. Recognized leader in the market place. -FM Global conducts its business uniquely in its market by relying heavily on engineering and research to generate profit and affect bottom line rather than simply relying on acturarial practices. This business model has proven to be highly effective and has dinstinguished the company from its competitors. 3. Comprehensive benefit package. -In a time when companies are cutting back on benefits, FM Global has remained committed to providing the most comprehensive beneift package to its employees in the forms of good healthcare benefits, 6%-match of 401(k), pension, company-provided vehicles, and even a $250 "healthy living" credit that can be applied towards gym membership, yoga and aerobics classes.

Cons

1. Salary compensation at the lower part of the spectrum. - when compared to similar jobs at other companies in the same industry, FM Global's salary is ranked at the "lower end" of the salary range. This could be a difference of $10,000 to $15,000. 2. Team work not as promoted/practiced as it can be - emplyees tend to work individually and are responsible for individual performances only. although cooperation and coordination is routinely carried out to complete tasks/projects, it is, nevertheless, far from a working "team-oriented" environment in which empolyees would brainstorm, map out plans, be assigned areas of leadership, and complete a project which can forster team spirit and generate pride in the working environment. 3. Lack of oppotunity for individual creativity and initiative -management is typically not supportive of creative solutions or initiatives that are outside of the company guidelines or processes. this environment is somewhat stiffling to those who thrives on providing solutions and meeting objectives through creativity.
