Fun company to work for

Pros

Lots of opportunity for growth. I have a lot of say in what I work on and the direction that projects move in. Little HR overhead, and relatively flat hierarchy. Managers/executives are very open and available. Coworkers are smart and dedicated.

Cons

Pressure to ship often sacrifices quality. Growth is prioritized over quality. The culture tends to reward action over results. No profit sharing.

Thanks for taking the time to share a review. I think you're right: the company has a "bias for action", and in software development that can lead to shorter shipping cycles instead of 'perfected' software. The good news is that software can be shipped quickly and repeatedly without wasting materials or inventory, etc. This lets us find out what gets used, and is worth investing more time in for performance and polish, and what isn't used, and wouldn't be a good place to invest lots of polish. Of course you've heard this before, since you've been here more than five years. And in the end, we all agree there needs to be a balance between shipping and perfecting, and we know that any call along that line is a little bit subjective. I've been here 20+ years, and have seen us ship stuff too early and need to improve it, and have seen us ship really polished stuff nobody wanted or used, which had wasted a lot of time. We're always a bit wrong, and we just keep trying to get better at making these judgment calls. If you'd like to make a bigger contribution to those calls -- or just want a better explanation of the long-term strategy that leads to those 'years of work' investments -- just send me (Bob) a coffee invite, or bring it up at an 'Ask Anything' meeting.

A great software company to build a career on

Pros

* Top-notch talent in all departments, many good senior managers as well * The company is very loose and laid-back when it comes to rules (take as much vacation as you feel you need, flexible hours, option to work from home, etc.) * Opportunities to move around teams and learn new things are there, if you want them * Perks such as free drinks, a video game library you can rent anything from, company-sponsored events/trips, an outdoor center with gear you can borrow for various sports/activities * Close to unsurpassed outdoor beauty, if mountains, trees, or the ocean are your thing * A very professional work environment, all religions and faiths (or lack thereof) are welcome and would feel comfortable working here, even though our products are Christian-oriented

Cons

* Benefits for anyone but the employee are very poor, 401k matching is on the low side * Bellingham is old, a bit run-down, and isolated from big-city amenities. The weather can wear on some people (I like it personally)

I prefer to think of Bellingham as having 'character'! :-) Yes, we're in some 100 year old buildings, but isn't that what the cool companies want, even in the big cities? Exposed ducts, brick and stone... in the middle of an awesome, walkable, organic, coffee-soaked, bike-friendly downtown. But you're right -- the winter weather can wear on some people (summer is awesome!) That's why we've got the office in Tempe, Arizona, too!

Pros

Culture - Love the people I work with. All are smart, considerate, friendly, and passionate about the work they do. Love the trust-based atmosphere that enables "make your own hours" and "unlimited vacation". Growth opportunities - The scope of technologies being developed at Faithlife combined with the knowledge level of coworkers and the resources Faithlife provides to facilitate growth do just that. The time I've spent here has expanded my own knowledge and abilities such that I'm confident I could be hired and succeed at any other (equivalent) job, if ever that became something I wanted or needed. Content - As alluded to above, the scope of technologies we develop is expansive. It's fun and rewarding to do the work we do. Bellingham - Love the area. Best spring and summer climate for outdoor activities (mountains, lakes, rivers, ocean, long daylight hours, sunny and warm). Winters can be a bit dreary (great for indoor activities).

Cons

Pay scale - Dollar amount is significantly less than one might get working an equivalent position in either Seattle or Silicon Valley. Cost of living and other factors apply to balance this a bit better, but there might still be room for improvement. Benefits - Great for singles, probably great for large families (kids are a fixed rate), but the cost to add a spouse is unaffordable at current salary.
