I hated it but was bearable till I found something better
Pros
The resort I worked at had free lunches, breakfasts, dinners. Lots of overtime. If you are a yes-man, you are rewarded with raises, promotions, opportunity to travel, training, and more hours. Overall everyone there was friendly, as long as you were good at meeting their expectations. There were good eggs. Hourly pay was much better than other companies in the same industry, but worse benefits.
Cons
High turnaround rate. Within three months I was their senior most part timer, the 3 other guys were fired or quit. No work life balance. Receiving a new schedule every week, sometimes with less than a 24 hour notice, sometimes 3 days into the next week. Management did the bear minimum to accommodate disabilities, complained regularly about having to do so, coworkers and management made fun of disabled employees, and the overall work environment was hostile to employees with Autism and ADHD. Management regularly complained about part time employees having second jobs, career ambitions outside of the company, and personal lives and aspirations. I was threatened to be fired multiple times while I was working there because I said I was unavailable to work some days when I was given last minute notice. Management had no work life balance, no boundaries with work, was in the office all of the time and constantly was complaining about how no one was putting in the hours they were. Management put a coworker on suspension for 2 weeks and then fired him immediately after. The reason for firing was that the employee had been asked by another department to help out when he had clocked out, and instead of dropping everything and helping, he reoriented that department to who was clocked in. My boss said he had to save face because the department my coworker turned down was complaining. Management was not good at holding itself accountable to things employees were struggling with. Upon talking to managers at other locations who were more level headed, I learned that this was work culture coming down from corporate. Every employee at Five Star is a resource, and will be taken advantage like one. Part time employees regularly work full time hours with no benefits during the busy season, and in the winter get minimal to no work. The trick is trying to stay on top of the work orders and the event calendar yourself and try to schedule other work around their constantly changing schedule. Hardball when negotiating salary, I negotiated but clearly not enough, when I left I realized I had coworkers with less experience that i was training making 7% more than me. This all was bearable for me for a year but days into working there I was already seeking other jobs.
