Pros

I worked with some of the smartest people I have ever worked with. There were no egos and everyone on the team were willing to help if you got stuck on a problem. As whole, Fjorge promotes the idea of growth in terms of knowledge and as a company. The positive culture is to help you succeed so the company succeeds as a team.

Cons

The only cons I have would be minor improvements to onboarding process, but have no doubt these will be made.

Pros

Fjorge is a company that in recent months began again to move in a direction of growth. They continue to improve on the clientele while staying true to working on diverse projects. The dev teams/pms work well together in the office.

Cons

The leadership team mentioned in the previous reviews are accurate. The issue that continues to persist is the toxic communication coming from the leadership team. Though mentioned that it was addressed, it seems that nothing has been communicated to any of the employees. The behavior demonstrated by the leadership team members continue to be toxic, negative, and unprofessional. The other concern with the negative environment and dialogue reside in that this has been going on for some time with no changes in sight.

Pros

If you are new to web development, this is a great place to get your feet wet. The onboarding process is fairly good, but somewhat dependant on who your mentor is and how busy they are with their own work. If you have a lot of experience, I would probably look somewhere else. Fjorge employees and management make an effort to mix some fun in with work. The office has a ping pong table where you will find employees playing at in the late afternoon. Sometimes the office will also win an excursion if the sales numbers are good. Past events include MN Wild games, Up Down Bar, and a puzzle room. The developers, in general, are a great group. They are incredibly supportive of one another and really embody a work hard, play hard mentality.

Cons

As fjorge’s company size has become stagnant, I don’t think anyone can keep blaming growing pains for the number of issues now happening at fjorge. In the past 6 months, fjorge has fired four employees (one got 60 days notice, while the others were terminated immediately) for not being a “cultural fit”. For a company of its size, this rate is somewhat alarming. What many those employees had in common was that they were vocal and opinionated about issues they saw in the workplace and areas where they saw an opportunity for improvement. They did not have poor job performance and often positively impacted the company’s culture and policies. One employee who helped spearhead the MN Tech Diversity Pledge was told when they were fired that they, “wanted to change the company culture, but the culture was not going to change.” Fjorge uses the Traction business model, and while firing employees for not being a cultural fit is part of that business model, fjorge has no written policy on when termination can or should be used. It is completely up to the PM’s discretion. This makes room for personal biases, as the evidence shows. However a member of leadership who notoriously creates a negative workplace culture, makes employees cry, and has driven PM’s to create a limited direct contact policy between that member of leadership and developers, has often had excuses made for them. After years of not exhibiting the company’s cultural values, it is doubtful that they would be fired for not being a “cultural fit”. As a final note, Project Managers are incredibly overworked and do not have the time to support their employees, and this is with the minimum number of employees per pod. PM’s were sometimes working 50 hour weeks with 5 developers to manage, and leadership’s goal is to get pods to a max of 8.

Fjorge Response

Thank you for this very honest feedback. fjorge has taken strides in the past quarter to prioritize both client satisfaction and employee retention. This review appeared on glassdoor in March, but the terminations mentioned took place in December/January. Though it is true 4 employees were terminated in the same quarter, each decision was difficult and made with great care for the betterment of the company. We encourage open, honest, and collaborative communication about company-wide issues. We do not terminate employment because of the issues raised. Culture fit is incredibly important, as it most impacts employee morale - collaboration is a key element of our culture. We are still growing. In the past quarter fjorge has created a new branch of the operations department and hired 10 new employees across all departments. Though many of the comments shared in this review do have partial truths, they are not the whole story. We take the recommendations in this review seriously, and our leadership/operations teams have already made improvements.
