Pros

The hours are flexible, and the pay is reasonable, as most stores are union. The benefits are quite good as well (i.e. medical, dental, fringe benefits--employees get 10% off non-food products, with about 5 or 6 "double-discount days" a year). You can learn a variety of skills, and will certainly develop a good work ethic if you decide to stick around longer than one month.

Cons

Corporate only promotes based on whether the book, however wrong it may be. It is mandatory that the department manager posts the schedule at 5 pm on Thursday--no sooner, no later. Stores are drastically under-staffed, while corporate (Portland) refuses to hear excuses as to why something wasn't accomplished. It is normal to receive a phone call during any time of the night when someone calls in sick, or if something went wrong. They expect you to be available at any time. Virtually no one within the stores is happy with their job. Turnover is very high, especially in store management.

Pros

Great place to earn a decent wage for unskilled work. I came to work for this company after dropping out of my second year of college, leaving a management career at McDonald's, and looking to advance myself with better opportunities in career path and salary. When I attempted to return to college, however, to complete a business degree, the company would not allow time for me to attend classes, nor would they reimburse for tuition, as promised.

Cons

management doesn't practice what they preach in terms of treating people right. My departments did not suffer the large employee turnovers that were seen in other departments, perhaps due to the fact that I placed all people first on my list of daily priorities, including my employees.

Pros

There are many opportunities for advancement. The management is nice and understanding. The front end is unionized. It is part of the Kroger family of stores which is doing very well.

Cons

They are very busy on the weekends and cashiers don't get a break between customers for hours. Cashiers are made to sign cash shortage slips on registers they only worked on for a few minutes. Registers are shared with no individual accountability, but video surveillance helps.
