Pros

They do have insurance as long as they let you work the hours to keep it. You get a pretty good workout Helps improve people skills

Cons

Depends on the manager but they are always changing so you really can't get used to a certain way things are ran. Often times they will not give you enough hours to keep your insurance or they will make you work long stretches like 10+ days in a row. The managers most often will not back you up and allow customers to basically abuse you. Very, very emotionally and physically draining job. Like I said, great motivation to get through school.

Fred Meyer: No longer a local business

Pros

Decent benefits, employee discount. It's a stable industry and a well-established business with a long history in the pacific northwest.

Cons

Fred Meyer pays sub-industry wages. Fred Meyer still presents itself as a local business, but it is owned by Kroger, and Kroger is cheap.

Pros

Flexible hours if your dept. manager likes you. Pay is not up to par for Portland for same jobs.

Cons

Store director needs to keep derogatory statements about employees private and to "themselves", not discussing this with on the floor associates. Screaming and yelling at employees on the floor in front of customers and saying that employees are worthless. Wow. What an example this person sets. Taking away hours, less people to do the job: if a dept. looses an employee, others have to pick up the job with less time and absolutely NO OVERTIME or one gets a reprimand with possible disciplinary actions (and this includes a minute overtime). Shortage of product is getting out of hand, cannot order product now unless it is completely out. Customer dissatisfaction and they won't come back. Always having to hunt down people to cover breaks and lunch when they are RIGHTS fought for by the union. Working without a contract for almost 2 years. Management treats lower employees like trash.
