Pros

It's a job. Can work 40+ during peak seasons, easy.

Cons

Most employees are Cut down to 20 hours after the new year, until almost summer. Managers are cut throat You are treated like you are replaceable (but they can never find help to replace employees who leave) The pay is awful. Can't pay portland cost of living on paycheck. They have not keep up. Just a few years ago, I could pay for myself, my partner and our child. Now I hardly have enough to pay my half and buy food/transportation. They don't defend employees against increasingly aggressive customers. They preach anti-discrimination but fail to actually follow through. Zero work/life balance. You're lucky to have enough time off to sleep a decent number of hours. But managers always get a fair schedule for themselves. They don't know what it is actually like to be a nonmanagement employee.

Pros

Good people and flexible work schedules

Cons

Lack of staff and hours allocated to departments leave employees over worked and burned out. Too many corporate expectations that disregard the employees and what they can actually accomplish given they are often missing the resources (hours, people, tools) to be able to do their jobs as expected. The bad managers go unchecked and their disrespectful behavior towards their employees is tolerated time and time again. Kroger completely out of touch with the pulse of the people working in the stores. It's too bad because there are a lot of really great people working there that try to make it better but just aren't set up for success. Profits over people.

It is an incredibly stressful and thankless place to work.

Pros

Because they're union, the wages are ok along with the benefits.

Cons

They run every department on a skeleton crew. They expect you to do the job of three for the pay of one. Seems like all the supervisors are cheating on their spouse with each other. It's gross and ridiculously common at my store. 🤮 There's really ZERO appreciation from corporate, on any level. They want you to shut up and work harder and faster whilst they sit back and make BILLIONS of dollars and RECORD profits from the pandemic. No hazard pay. No protection, (unless we are being visited by someone from the health department or Eco lab, then they make us all scurry and pretend we do it all the time. I refuse to play along 😒). All in all it's a negative environment and customer's make it all that much worse! People are miserable and they WANT you to know it.
