Pros

Many people said GIC provided good benefits, it is true if you compare it with those 2nd commercial banks

Cons

Leadership sucks, they seem to be deliberate like the politicians but they never told the truth in front of people. Most of words are lip services only. Techonology staff are treated as 2nd class citizens and contributions are not valued even though CXO kept saying they want the firm to be driven by Technology. Understaff is a big problem in Technology department and HRs spent huge efforts and huge money in recruiting but good people in the market are not willing to join them because the firm has been well known for its toxic culture and incompetent managers/leaders.

Pros

- Very good staff benefits (including work from home) - Pantry is well-stocked with snacks, drinks and even ice-cream! - Nice office in CBD area - Good branding to include in your resume

Cons

- Extremely poor leadership within the team. Middle management has no leadership or managerial quality to speak of notwithstanding that they have gone through leadership training - Does not provide guidance or direction. Certain managers can micromanage. - Culture is toxic and unhealthy, and does not based on meritocracy but rather how well you please or impress or hide/cover up things from your boss - Management people can be rude, condescending, uninspiring and only care about money and meeting their own KPIs. They don't grow or develop their people and fail in bringing out the best in their staff - Political game is strong and although you can try hard not to get involved, you will still be implicated somehow - A place where 'smart' people gather but sadly basic respect for one another is hardly there - Different teams appear to be collaborative but generally each team/individual is more concerned with own self-interest and KPIs - Systems and processes are extremely backward and aged which led to counterproductive issue - Company espoused positive values and beliefs but not practised by management in reality

Politics and power play.

Pros

Good work location, nice office environment Good welfare - but that’s being cut due to costs Up to date with tech toys. Classy looking workplace The company encourages continuous learning The set up is cozy enough for everyone to know everyone else There are still some old Guards who believe in doing right for the better of Singapore.

Cons

Promotions are based on power play and popularity. Worst ever IT control based functions. If you come from a mature background, you will reek in disgust at how “security”team managers with no control mileage or relevant credentials blame everyone else for their own lack of foresight. it’s all blame and no accountability. There’s a lot of double standards, condescension and bullying that go on under the radar. Some mid level managers insist on having line of sight and micro manages everything everyone does, from grammar checks to calling you stupid, insults your dressing and then tells you that you don’t have a future. Senior IT governance based function managers bully the apps teams with nasty emails and an iron fist in a show of power and public shaming in order for the apps teams to comply but the same manager does not apply the same rules when his own team breaks the rules and approves his own controls. At the rate he was going, you’d think he was probably an agent of foreign influence. Managers do not empower people to reach theIr full potential and lack leadership skills. They’re leaders by appointment and authority, but not by character. Instead, there’s a lot of desk slamming, shouting and fear inducing, all done in public. Sneaky culture. People actually get rewarded for telling on others. The culture has changed a lot in the past few years. You can’t really trust who’s telling on you for that promo or conversion. You can’t avoid politics altogether. Doing your own work and minding your own business doesn’t guarantee you will be left alone.
