You're just a number

Pros

The benefits are pretty good and there is a decent work/life balance.

Cons

The company just sees you as a number and does not care about its employees at all. They recently became slightly more transparent about their resource groups identifying them now as business resource groups instead of employee resource groups. I spent several years within the Diversity and Inclusion sector of the company and quickly came to realize that the only thing they cared about was the way they looked externally and they are not actually interested in diversity, equity, or inclusion. Be very wary of what the literature says as they are happy to support companies that are knowingly anti-lgbtq+ or that have a long history of being anti-lgbtq+(Chik-Fil-A, Salvation Army). The company would rather placate bigots than actually be concerned about the diversity of the workforce. The pay from the company is well below the industry standard and while the benefits help, the compensation is not equivalent. The PTO is not sufficient, especially for those who have dealt with Covid the last few years requiring many to work when they are sick. The company is happy to let the best worker's leave without any effort to keep them while at the same time they are unable to find new people to hire in causing extra load on those who are left behind. It seems very telling that there has not been an associate survey since August 2018.

Pros

Pretty decent pay and decent benefits

Cons

Lack of support from management. They're never on site, take forever to respond to you. Management gossips and fraternize outside of work. If they're friends with you and consider you part of their little clique, they have your back. If not, they could care less about you. They ignore issues with employees who could seriously cause clients injury or death, but happily escalate minor complaints to HR if they don't like the employee at the center of the complaint. HR is even worse. They're useless. Also take forever to respond. Extremely hostile and unprofessional. If you question or disagree with anything you are immediately put under a microscope by management / HR and they will actively look for a reason to write you up or fire you all while being completely blind to real issues with employees who are going to eventually cause them to have a lawsuit thrown at them because management ignores complaints and refuses to escalate them to HR.

Pros

In my team the work environment is very healthy. We have great leaders whom I trust. The work environment is healthy. Software engineering managers strive to hold us to a 40 hour workweek. I've never felt overworked here. In software engineering we do anything from web applications to mobile apps to assembly code drivers. There's a lot of freedom to move around to try different things. I've known a number of folks to switch teams as their interests change. The work itself is challenging. Garmin is always needing to innovate to stay in business. We set a very high bar with new product introductions. What other company introduces new wearables and action cams to the market which are instantly recognized as amongst the best in class. Aviation is slowly but surely growing, and Marine is #1 in the world. We want to win here. I'm content with my salary. RSUs and PSUs come as you demonstrate value to the team. Health insurance benefits are absolutely outstanding -- I pay next to nothing to have pretty much everything covered. And the Employee Stock Purchase Plan is a wonderful benefit -- you're guaranteed to make 15% on 10% of your salary. In some periods where the stock price jumped I made 50% on my money. 401(k) match is similarly outstanding -- 75 cents to the dollar up to 10% of your income. If I made a career out of Garmin I'd be guaranteed to retire a millionaire with that kind of match. On top of all that, the campus is growing. It's really transformed the last few years to be a fun place to play. Sand volleyball, soccer/ultimate Frisbee, a walking trail, gardening club, fitness room with equipment, ping pong, and so on. It's just a fabulous place to work. I can't speak for the negative reviews here, but my experience has been nothing but positive.

Cons

Honestly, nothing. This is a genuine endorsement of the company.
