Merit vs Seniority

Pros

If you are a designer or an engineer or a tradesperson...you will have it made here...the benefits are not the best...but not bad...and the pay is considered one of the best in the area.

Cons

Low ceilings for administrative personnel...room for advancement is practically non-existent unless you can change job categories...not a lot of support for personal growth and development...hard to get a review of any kind. Advancement seems tied to seniority rather than merit...a lot of antiquated methods and systems due to the strict naval security requirements.

Pros

- Good place to gain entry level experience. - A lot of opportunities to move within the company / expand your experience. - Excellent job security and future business outlook

Cons

- Highly "silo'd"/compartmentalized departments. Work and responsibilities are often handed off to other departments with little knowledge of the product. Leads to excessive re-work. - Rather than motivating/disciplining employees, supervision will transfer employees between departments. The resulting work-load becomes the responsibility of the people who put in effort. - If you work in the shipyard (production side of the business) schedules change drastically and often. Employees are often asked to "remain flexible" and support projects at a moment's notice on weekends/holidays/back-shifts. - "Mandatory overtime" is often enforced on a department or directorate wide basis, without regard to individual workloads. - Overtime was one of the best benefits of the job. Company has been slowly reducing / removing overtime (applies to salaried positions).
