Pros

Opportunity to work on interesting array of projects across campus community (staff, faculty, & staff). Competitive salary.

Cons

Top-heavy, flat organization with limited ability for junior and mid-level staff to move up and grow professionally. Very risk averse culture and heavy institutional inertia means university is often a step behind. Arbitrary review cycles don't allow for best and brightest performers to ascend.

Pros

Great benefits, regular pay increase. Many good employees

Cons

Full of corruption at the higher levels. Management at upper levels of several departments are corrupt. Look at the various lawsuits filed against them; and then recognize there are many more who would have filed lawsuits if they had the means to do so and didn't want to be forever labeled as a litigious employee. Policies are written by (or with) lawyers to protect the university; it is expected that you do not actually follow their written policies, but they don't tell you this. You have to figure out on your own which policies your supervisors actually expect you to follow and when. Do what they say and sometimes you get in trouble. Don't do what they say, and sometimes you get in trouble.

Pros

Good name, history and tradition. First job in DC, so very grateful for the opportunity. Was able to move in between offices when I needed to change job. Decent salary. Love working with students and colleagues.

Cons

Too large and disconnected. Bureaucratic. Too political to the point that the practical gets affected. Some of my move ended up being a salary cut, just because leadership is not willing to address leadership problems. Health insurance is expensive and not worth it. Egregious inefficiency is overlooked if it is within leadership, fairness is not exercised, especially in salaries/duties, no transparency between HR and employees regarding their issues. More specific issues: No Winter Break for staff and very stringent on teleworking.
