      GW needs to make a lot of improvements to help its staff and not focus so much on faculty

      Pros

      Your satisfaction with the job will depend greatly on the unit or department you work in. The university is very silo -ed so if you get in a good unit, you will be ok, but then again will have very little exposure to other areas and colleagues.

      Cons

      The university does not look out for its employees. Staff often feel like second class citizens to faculty. The medical benefits are awful. There is no sense of community or school spirit, which is why I entered into higher education. There are few opportunities for advancement.

      Pros

      Good work/life balance. Flexibility. Good platform to position yourself for the next career move.

      Cons

      Extremely bureaucratic and political. Not a good fit for a long term career if you are non-academic. Ass-covering over performance is a common mentality.
