Pros

I love being able to actually teach!! It seems like I've been pulled into some many different directions throughout my career, not understanding why my teaching degree didn't match with my job. Now that I'm teaching at the amazing Georgia Cyber, I can honestly say I couldn't have made a better choice. I love what I do and I love that GCA allows me to do it! I can enjoy my career, along with my family and that's the best in both worlds.

Cons

There's nothing that I can say that is a negative. I've watch this school take feedback from teachers, staff, parents and students...... and they actually MADE those changes. I'm so thankful that they listen to us.

Pros

Decent health insurance. 25% match in 403b. GaTRS Retirement. If you are "in", better relationships and better salary. Annual bonus (amount varies, average 5% of current salary, heavily taxed) 4 weeks off in summer plus all normal days off for schools (holidays, spring break, etc). Required travel reimbursed up to $90 per day mileage and $41 per day meals. Internet reimbursed $45/monthly Computer provided. (subpar Dell 5500)

Cons

The tasks and duties given to teachers are numerous on top of teaching a caseload up to 175 students. Many unrelated job duties assigned. Annual bonus take home is less than 50% after taxes are taken out. Reasonable health insurance premium for employee. If you add a spouse or children it's oInflation. Only $41 per day for meals when traveling. No change for recent insane inflation. Only $45/mo internet reimbursed when Georgia allows employers to reimburse up to 90% of the bill. As this job requires high speed internet service, a more realistic reimbursement should be closer to $80+ per month. The board of directors do not address communications of concern. The "good ole boy" system reigns supreme. It is ALL about who you know AND which department you are in. Merit pay does not exist here, that is why there is no pay transparency! Disorganization causes MUCH stress and duplicate work. There is NO project management, no planning ahead, no process for organization. The motto is "building the plane while it is in the air". The motto is "putting students first" and while teachers, family engagement liaisons, and attendance specialists are definitely carrying this motto, there are many district directors (academic, counseling, operations, etc) and the GCA Board of Directors who show regularly that they are not! The interim superintendent is supposed to be a lawyer and you can tell that is true in his most recent email to staff where staff are told they can now log off at 4:00 every day versus the 5:00 previous schedule. So now staff are allowed to work from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. but the caveat is that they must have completed all of their job duties before signing off, which is an almost impossible task for most employees! Therefore, for the most part, staff will not be signing off at 4:00 p.m.. District Academics Director is highly unorganized and lacks the necessary skills to do better. This causes a terrible trickle-down effect of scrambling at the last minute to make sure curriculum is prepared and ready for students. Delays in academic calendars coming out. Miscommunications regarding interim assessments. The list goes on!

Pros

You’re not commuting, safer health wise if you are nervous about Covid. Amazing students from all walks of life. You can be in your home and have the relative flexibility that affords ie: can eat at home, etc

Cons

The superintendent/head of school taking over and the low morale and terrible workplace culture coincide. People are made to feel as though they are stealing time when they need to take their RTO. They’re also made to feel they are stealing time if they dash out for a quick errand during non class times. There is no way to win. There seems to be a constant message that “some people” are not working hard. Direct managers do what they can to buffer the disorganized nonsense from the district level but it still seeps through. There’s a distinct difference in the school level vs district level. District admin make it very clear they want a culture of compliance (their words). They make It clear they do not want feedback. No pulse checks or any other measure of employee satisfaction have been given in any recent memory. On top of these workplace toxicity problems, the pay is much less than a traditional school. There is no pay scale. Everyone starts at the same (low) salary. The payoff used to be flexibility but most relative flexibility is gone. Teachers teach all day then have meetings and other tasks and there is truly no way to ever finish each day. The live class platform is new and glitchy and causes many problems and affects live class quality on a daily basis but never seems to improve or be replaced. It’s very defeating. No diversity education initiatives ever seem to stick, despite being one of the most diverse public schools in the state. Teachers are not allowed to speak out or discuss any current events (ie: June 2020 events, Election Day, capital Riots), black history month is not a school wide celebration, etc
