Dangerous Fieldwork

Pros

Kind coworkers, lots of young people so a sense of collegiality

Cons

Dangerous!!!! Project managers are overstressed and budgets are tight. Many times I would ask to see a field site before a full day of field work but they wouldn't want to pay for me to spend a day becoming familiar with a project site. They also wouldn't want to pay for another staff member to do what should have been a two person job to come out with me, so I would be juggling way too much work and pressure alone. They would send me out ALONE, often in inclement weather, to take surface water samples somewhere hours away that I had never even seen before. Tolerance of error was negligible. If a sample site was inaccessible (often happened because no one would actually view these sites beforehand and samples sites were chosen via google maps) the project managers had a kind of eyes shut "we don't care how it gets done, get it done" approach that led to lots of dangerous situations like trying to climb down steep ravines during rainstorm flood conditions or taking samples under a freeway overpass full of baking concrete when temperatures were over 100 degrees. They took advantage of young new hires that didn't realize they could say no. Lots of other things I could say here re: low pay, no work life balance, manipulative project managers, many holidays being unobserved, low PTO, unrealistic expectations, private equity ownership but the main thing I need people to understand who are considering working here is that this company does not value your safety!!
