Lost It’s Way

Pros

Strong market position from manufacturing high quality products. Strong commitment to safety. Lots of really good, smart people.

Cons

The company has lost its direction. It wants to be so much more than what it is, a steel company. It makes steel, but it has an overweight marketing department. (Steel doesn’t need that much marketing) It makes steel, but invests in a Silicon Valley presence. It makes steel but divests from a major market segment at the bottom moments before it reaches its high. It makes steel but has to make its employees focus on buzzwords like ‘Purpose’. YOUR PURPOSE IS STEEL!!!! The environment is negative more often than not. The management is hamstrung by the Brazilian ownership. There is a false appearance of autonomy but the reality is that nothing happens without Brazil. Nobody is safe. Jobs don’t last. Even if you’re high performing because change is the only constant. Not usually change for the positive. Some folks have found positions of long tenure, but they’re so beholden to a highly politicized hierarchy that decisions are all relegated to that chain of command (used loosely).

Short term troubled industry

Pros

Culture is one that advertises a strong sense of caring for the employees. The business is very diverse and sponsors sharing of best practices across the locations in an effort to continuously improve and drive engagement.

Cons

While the culture is one of treating people with respect and was proven historically during the housing crisis, the given the financial situation of the business has necessitated a short term change to cash sustainability. There is minimal reinvestment into the dwindling equipment, processes are loosing competitive position on efficiency vs some competitors. Low cost imports are also driving extreme price pressure and taking some market share. The momentum has shifted negatively over the past few years away from longer term competitive focuses to short term projects. Impression is each year, there is a new focus that is urgent to turn around the business. Business systems are too complex and inefficient. Launching of SAP resulted in a significant loss of market share to key customers from a troubled rollout. Morale is significantly lower in many locations among many management and production employees but this is not the case for all locations. While still decent employer, the negative trend has caused significant turnover as managers, production employees, and sales force leave the business due to low confidence of the future.

Pros

All the good things about this company are a thing if the past. Since ameristeel was bought out there has been total disregard for employees. It won't be long until Gerdau closes up shop in North America.

Cons

The absolute worst job & company I have ever worked for in my entire life. I wouldn't recommend working at Gerdau to anyone. If you are here looking for a job, then keep looking.
