AWFUL, PETTY MANAGEMENT

Pros

Stock options, interesting science and products

Cons

Mean, petty management. If you are not one of the boys (or suck-uppy girls), watch out. Promotions are rarely merit based. Work ethic non-existent in many departments, face time matters not competency.

Pros

Gilead is a decent company to learn and develop if your management is willing to develop you. If not, you’ll be stuck doing a 7 to 7 job every day without any recognitions or promotions. I started as a contractor, then later became a full time employee. Had multiple re-org within the past three years, and new directions depending on upper management. In my opinion, Gilead grew too fast trying to hire new talents while trying to backfill burned out talents. It’s a never ending cycle, where majority of the talents working for Gilead only had been with company for 1 to 3 years. This is one company I wouldn’t recommend unless you enjoy 7 to 7 work schedule with no appreciation. The old timers “with at least 7 years” are stubborn and unwilling to learn and adopt to new things. It a tough job, if you are hungry, take the job so you don’t starve. Then you should immediately start looking, don’t get comfortable. This is a hit and run situation.

Pros

High powered project teams and fast timelines means you get to see drugs you work on go into the clinic and help patients (provided you work on antivirals.)

Cons

Scientists get paid dirt compared to people with similar education and experience in other areas. This is not Gilead's fault, but if you are a scientist here you will not be able to afford to rent or own a house in town and will be stuck commuting for hours, unless you have a wealthy spouse or parents, etc. Despite having recently helped launch the biggest drug ever, my total compensation has dropped for three years straight. My kid now walks home from school alone because I can't afford an after school program, and I have to do side work on the weekends to make ends meet. They're threatening to put us in open floor plan office spaces and that may be the last straw for me.
